Innocent
Voltaire Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All the evil in the world
Pushing down on you
And all the venom in their words
What could you do?
What kind of ignorance
Causes them to be so,
So sick and vile and evil
You did nothing to them
It's just not fair, you don't deserve it.

It's not your fault
You're innocent
It's the world that's wrong
You're innocent

When they scream and when they yell
And tear you down
They make your life a living hell
When they come 'round
There's nothing you can say
That doesn't contradict them,
'Cause all they want's a victim
On which to vent their rage
It's just not fair, you don't deserve it.

It's not your fault
You're innocent
It's the world that's wrong
You're innocent
Just hold on,
You're innocent
Some day the world will belong
To the innocent

So let's wear black,
Let's blast The Cure and Siouxsie
Then we'll go see
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
And then we'll forget to go home.

It's not your fault
You're innocent
It's the world that's wrong
You're innocent.
Just hold on,
You're innocent.

Some day the world will belong
To the innocent.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Voltaire's song Innocent address the unfairness and injustice of the world when innocent people are subjected to the cruelty and negativity of others. The song speaks directly to those who find themselves in this type of situation, where the weight of the world and the vitriol of others are forcefully pushing them down. The song acknowledges that it is not the person's fault that they are being attacked, that they are innocent of anything that would warrant such cruelty. The message repeated throughout the song is clear: it's not fair, and they don't deserve it.

The song's lyrics go on to offer comfort and hope, pointing to a brighter future where things will be different. It calls for solidarity in the face of cruelty, urging people to come together and support each other. It recognizes that sometimes the only way to cope with the pain is to embrace darkness and lose oneself in it, as represented by the mention of wearing black, listening to The Cure and Siouxsie, and watching The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The chorus offers a resounding call to hold on, to remember that innocence will prevail and that one day, the world will belong to the innocent.

Voltaire's "Feathery Wings" saved my life so that I could grow up to be a therapist and play this song (and I often do) for my little teen clients. It's all come full circle. I sometimes wonder if he really understands just how much good he's put into the world all while pretending to be dark and evil.

Voltaire has been the soundtrack of some of the best times of my life, and the story he told this past weekend before played "Raised By Bats" of how he almost didn't stick around really fked with my head -- if you take this one strand out of the woven pattern of life, I wouldn't have met some of my best friends, I'd have never gone to DragonCon, I would probably have not gotten into the convention scene, I wouldn't have moved to Philadelphia with another fan (we were only there for a few months, but it was delightful, heh). I dodged a life that would have been all the emptier without him and his music in it. And you know, I know people who have met their spouses at his shows, some of these couples went on to have kids... and there's this whole world of connection that people wouldn't have had if Dr Frankenfurter hadn't introduced himself and whispered "you look like you need a friend" in Voltaire's ear. This music wouldn't exist. These worlds wouldn't exist. These friends wouldn't exist. And hell, the same is true for any of us, we have no idea how many people we touch just by sticking around. Hatred is a disease, but kindness is a thread -- someone helped him, his music saved me and so many others, and now I get to help clients at my job -- it's like this thread that connects all of that.

I'm just so blessed that despite the bullying, there are people who help people who help people, and you can see that in all the other comments on this page. This scene is fucking amazing like that.

And now I get to see that life really does get better. Despite all the bullying, V seems really happy these days with Mayumi and putting so much passion into The Black Labyrinth, dancing around like the goblin king and making records with David Bowie's bandmates. It's fucking amazing to see what happens when hate doesn't win.

Thank you V from the bottom of my heart for sticking through what sounds like the worst part of your life for the sake of those, like me, who needed you in theirs. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go build myself a time machine as I have to go teach some punks in New Jersey that they don't mess with my friends. Never mess with the 5'0" girls, we be crazy!

This song is truly beautiful. I was bullied quite a bit when I was a kid. I eventually made peace with it, but my nephew has been going through the exact same things. I let him hear this song earlier today. He almost cried tears of joy. " He knows exactly how I'm feeling " was his reply. Both my nephew and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Man Voltaire, how does it feel being the greatest person to have ever walked the face of the Earth? Because honestly I've never seen a person so kind, understanding, down to earth, non judgemental, funny, fashionable, talented, skilled, intelligent and attractive in all my life. You have drastically improved my life. Thank you from the bottom of my heart :)

Oh No

+Dreamer511 Amen to that.

Middle school... I wish I knew about this song back when I was in it... So many cruel people... Now a days, people give credit to artist like Lady Gaga for making songs that tell you to be yourself, but others get cast of to the side. Voltaire is one who shouldn't be, because this song has had a much better effect on me then any other song I've ever heard.

He's such a sweet person :). He formats the song as though he's just your buddy trying to comfort you and he's just talking directly to you :)
