Robber Baron
Voltaire Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Of all things malign,
An accident on the assembly line today
Cut him to the bone,
"But what can you expect from clumsy 8-year-olds?" I'm told.
Look outside the window.
See the growing crowd
Of kids with missing arms and feet?
Nothing to eat?
What cold heartless beast
Can sit and have his feast every night,
While their plight's always in his sight?

Robber Baron in the tower,
Counting all his gold.
You know while he goes unchecked
And stays in power,
He's never gonna let,
He's never gonna let,
He's never gonna let us go!

Marching in the streets,
The mighty hammer of the Baron's own police.
With their flags and guns,
And guns and drums and boots,
And blood red banners, dogs and guns.
Black-shirts pound the pavement,
With their bold insignias of wolves,
And bats and snakes,
And birds of prey.
Filling us with fear.
Our hearts are full of tears.
Who so vain, for his gain,
Causes so much pain?

Robber Baron in the castle,
Basking in his greed.
You know while he breaks no sweat,
And gets no hassle,
He's never gonna let,
He's never gonna let,
He's never gonna let us free!

Robber Baron in the tower,
Counting all his gold.
You know while he goes unchecked,
And stays in power,
He's never gonna let,
He's never gonna let,
What do you want?
(FREEDOM!)
When do you want it?

(NOW!)
Only we can make us free.

Overall Meaning

The song "Robber Baron" by Voltaire is a commentary on greed and exploitation by the wealthy elite, represented by the titular "Robber Baron." The lyrics describe the horrific working conditions of the poor, who are often children, and are sacrificed for the sake of profit. The first verse, in particular, points out the callous disregard for the safety of workers, as even children are put to work in dangerous environments. The chorus references the immense wealth of the Robber Baron, who is portrayed as living in a tower, counting his gold while the poor suffer. The song also touches on the use of brutal force to maintain the Robber Baron's power, as the police and black-shirted enforcers are described as marching through the streets, instilling fear and sadness in the people.

Is it just me or does almost all of his songs sound like they can be made it musicals?

Halvblodsprinsen100

the whole of the "to the bottom of the sea" album is basically a musical. tells a story, even.

I shared this with my 9th grade teacher once because we were learning about Robber Barons and the industrial revolution, and she shown the rest of the class the next day. I was secretly very proud despite my look of terror as she called my name in credit of showing her. Just a tidbit i thought was funny

I first found Voltaire when my English teacher showed us a video of When Your Evil paired to clips of the Something Wicked This Way Comes movie. We were reading the book in class and she wanted to give us an idea of what it would be like. That song was so good, it got stuck in my head so I ended up looking it up on YouTube and here we are :)

Generally speaking I WRITE my music. Though I do have other musicians improvise the parts I have not written.
