For those interested in what they are hearing, this is an modern example of the Epic Metal genre. A lot of metal has been deemed epic, but Warlord is one of the leaders in the early 80s American movement actually called Epic Metal (Warlord, Medieval Steel, Manilla Road, *Manowar etc...). Unlike the British Wishbone ash twin guitar sound, Epic Metal featured one guitar, played by one guitar god, and the rest of the band (bass, drums, vocals and sometimes keyboards) was built around the guitar and its keeper. With only one guitar, this kept the music very open and atmospheric giving it that roomy epic sound. This partly comes from most of the bands hailing from the Midwest USA, which is very broad and expansive place, compared to parts of Europe. The music is usually midtempo with thundering uncluttered drums, exposed bass, and melodic leading guitar.

The best way though to explain is to listen, and if you listen carefully to all the bands listed above, you will hear a stark distinction in style of those bands to their European counterparts at the time.

The storytelling (yes metal tells stories) is also very different than most other genres. The style of storytelling (not particularly the lyrics as many songs have different themes) but the style fits into the ancient Greek model of Epic Poetry. So the songs themselves are big and broad, focusing on the aesthetics of the ancient tales of Heroes and legends, though again they might not be particularly about them, the aesthetic is there. You will hear a lot about Kings, and Warriors, Glory and Triumph and of course Steel! These are all metaphors for self empowerment, and masculinity.

A lot of these signature markings of the Epic Metal movement have been co opted into European styles like Power Metal by fans of these early bands, but to truly understand what they mean, you need to get with the American masters. Because like Jazz is an American music, Epic Metal is truly a home grown American style, that is best heard from an American source (not political or national America - the land of America).

Warlord returns after many years (1983) and puts out this great record from their own pockets. If you appreciate it, go buy the record!
