Was this style of jazz a type of "movement" in the 1960s? I notice that musicians such as Wayne Shorter and Freddie Hubbard and sometimes Lee Morgan, Herbie Hancock and Horace Silver, just to name a few did this type of jazz that obviously had swing to it but on a different note or feeling, if you will. What i mean is that the feeling is not "happy" (allegro) nor the other end: "sad" nor a "ballad" either. I call it a "serious tone" or a "serious swing." I know it's a loaded question but what do you think?

@@jazzywayz9773 God Willing, I will do my best to answer your questions in regards to Wayne Shorter. However, in reference to the other artists you mentioned i will leave them out for the sake of continuity and clarity. Generally speaking I would consider this to be from the late/later “bop” era of jazz. Wayne Shorter wrote a lot of compositions in a 3(or 6) swing feel and it did not have the same recurring prominent back-beat of a tune in 4. That is to say instead of a feel that could generally be counted “da 1, da 2, da 3, da 4”(emphasis on 2&4) it would be “da 1-2-3, da 1-2-3”. Now, in regards to harmony it’s a very loaded answer. By the 1960’s jazz harmony in general became EXTREMELY advanced. I will skip the vast evolution of those advances and get to what I was referring to specifically regarding Wayne Shorter’s two part harmonies and specifically in the horn voices. What was beautiful about shorter was his ability to select only 2 single line voices from vast extended chord harmonic structures and set them in the predominant voices and make it all work(depending on what works for an individuals ear). I hope that at least scratches the surface of an answer that could be as vast as explaining how the complex eco system of a fen works and has evolved. I suggest studying the evolution of the cycle of 5ths and modal harmony for more answers.

@@chrispantazi81 i had a great feeling that i sent my question to someone who knew music, i am very impressed by your reply. You obviously know music in a more profound sense. I am not the knowledgeable person you are in this respect but i get the general sense of what you explained. My father is a singer, musical engineer and so i grew up around music all my life and believe i have a keen ear to it. And you're right, this is a later bop era. Miles Davis, like Picasso (drawing and painting is my art), either invented new movements in jazz or he joined which ever one was surging. Remember he went from the Prestige quintet to the Columbia quintet to the quintet with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, etc; the latter is closer to this style of jazz. For the longest time i have been trying to put a name to it. What do you call this era? Is this when they are on the borderline of atonality? By the way, what do you call when both trumpet and saxophone play the same melody in the chorus? Is this the two-part harmonies in the horn voices? (I will follow up with links to tunes which show you what i mean) Sorry for so many questions. Take your time in answering. Blessings!!

When i listen to these old Wayne 'Shorter recordings years later, I really get the sense of Shorter as a composer. It's like he's crafting shapes out of sound; or chipping away at a block of stone to get the right shape. Something different from other saxophonists:players vs composers? Wayne composing spontaneously? But's that's what they were all doing, right? The sense of Wayne knowing where he's going from the beginning , perhaps?

It's his ability to reach actual beauty while being at the mid 60s {inside harmonic limit} in songs like Iris or Fall or Infant Eyes or Teru. These songs are axiomatically beautiful but extremely advanced harmonically all at the same time. Getting beyond that virtical limit he found as a jazz musician is very difficult and kinda requires a reset of approach if you know what I mean but something always gets lost.

I enjoy Herbie's freedom over the sustained horn notes of the head - the contrast is striking while his comping creates such a hip backdrop to Wayne's solo. Herbie's own one solo chorus is fire and so cool to hear Herbie with Elvin on drums!
