A Dog's Life
Wild Beasts Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Walk colder home, walk cold
My press face on the ice lead
A time is heaven when you call
Painted lipstick on it
Walk the truth up to me
Border like all the others
Made of something better
So throw a ball up into space
Hold the phone up to its face
Leave it outside in the rain
A tired walk by it's head
Never speak of me again
The lyrics to Wild Beasts's song A Dog's Life depict a bleak outlook on life and relationships. The opening line, "Read the odds of this song," suggests that the singer knows the likelihood of success in a relationship is minimal. The repetition of "walk colder home, walk cold" reinforces the idea that there is a lack of warmth and connection. The line "my press face on the ice lead" highlights the singer's vulnerability and the feeling of being crushed or defeated.
The following line, "a time is heaven when you call," indicates that the singer might be waiting for someone to reach out, even if it's just for a brief moment of comfort. The painted lipstick on the truth could be seen as masking the reality of a situation--a relationship that seems more superficial than genuine. The line "walk the truth up to me" could be interpreted as a plea for honesty.
The last stanza seems to indicate that the singer is ready to move on and start anew. "Throw a ball up into space" suggests a desire for change and freedom from the current situation. "Hold the phone up to its face" could mean that the singer is cutting off communication, putting distance between themselves and their past. The final line, "never speak of me again," is a clear indication that the singer is ready to leave the relationship and start fresh.
