Little Things
Willie Nelson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I hope I won't disturb you with this call
I'm just in town for such a little while
And I thought perhaps you'd like to hear the news
Jeannie's grades were the highest in the school
Billy sure does look a lot like you
I understand your other son does too
And Billy said tell mom I miss her so
These were some little things
I thought you'd like to know

Remember Sam and Peg who lived next door
With them it seemed we always laughed so much
Well Sam and Peg don't live there anymore
I understand they broke up just like us
The house we lived in now has been torn down
Of all the things we owned the last to go
A freeway now runs through that part of town
These were some little things
That I thought you'd like to know

These were some little things
That I thought you'd like to know

Overall Meaning

In Willie Nelson's song Little Things, the singer is reaching out to an old lover with whom he had a relationship that ended badly. The singer is in town for a short period of time and decides to call just to share some news with her. He tells her some "little things" about what's going on in their old hometown. He starts off by telling her about their children. Jeannie, their daughter, had the highest grades in school. He goes on to say that their son Billy resembles her ex-lover, and that he misses his mom. It's clear that the singer still maintains a connection with their children, even if it has been some time since they've spoken.

The second verse takes a different turn, with the singer sharing information about their former neighbors, Sam and Peg. He notes that they always had a good time together and that it was a sad story to hear that they had broken up. The house in which they all lived has been torn down, and the only thing that remains is a freeway which runs through their old town. These are all, as the title suggests, little things but they reveal a lot about the heart of the song. In reaching out, the singer hopes to reconnect and share a moment of connection- one that he might not have had otherwise.
