My Favorite Things
Yo-Yo Ma Lyrics

Jump to: Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't like the people that keep my name in their grill
But I take hate as love so I'll take whatever still
One time they hate, but then they waiting to chill
And the second I drop music they say that they feel
Everything that I've been spitting steady fakin the real
Ain't enough minutes in the day to be wastin em killed
Everybody thinking that I'm wasting just chasing a mill
But people got things they want to do but never will

Some people have bad feelings no doubt
Some people use all their time chasing the clout
My music's been tasted and frankly spit out
But it's also been taken and loved like a spouse
Sometimes you're feeling great your head's in a cloud
Other times reality hits, and you'll fall back down
People looking for answers that'll never be found
Until you realize the truth that is all around aye

I got things on my mind
I'm saying some things on my mind
How am I using my time? How am I using my rhymes
I Gotta say things on my mind
I'm gonna say things on my mind
How am I using my time? How am I using my life?

Took the t from trap and I placed it right in the dirt
Like a headstone for all of that wasted work
I got some haters flaming yah they looking so burnt
It's time for me to apply what i learn from church
I'm fluent you a nuisance, Just a flea to my flu spit
That's true kid, swear that I'm bout to lose it
I'm choosing what I do with
Yeah I'm crusin
My crew sick
Not like the quote popular quote really "who?" clique

When I want it I grab it
In late I've been runnin from my habits
A bad guy in my past and I'm remaining so savage
Yah Im retaining my magic
There's no containing my madness
I may not make it from rappin
Cuz My life is not so lavish
I'm not at base like an acid
I get confused like contraption
Some make a promise but then break it up just like a fraction
My lines got people like what just happened?
If you can't follow what I'm sayin then go study the captions

I got things on my mind
I'm saying some things on my mind
How am I using my time? How am I using my rhymes
I Gotta say things on my mind
I'm gonna say things on my mind
How am I using my time? How am I using my life?

My music was okay but now that's in the past tense
I'm done with the cheap stuff, I'm runnin right past it
I Know the end is nigh and I'm tryna outlast it
If there's a party you can bet that imma crash it
In glorious fashion, come on son call me captain
Everywhere I lead, just call me the captain Falcon
Cleaning up naysayers, give me 'nother napkin
After listening to this tell me that I'm not rappin

Just hope I make it thru another night
My wits are sharp but senses dull just like a butter knife
And when I hit the mic I bet I get them butterflies
But all Im tryna do is teach you how to love your life
Hit your chest, go and flex, yah we get it you got pride
Frankly no one cares that's something you don't realize
I'm set on humility yah that's my one prize
I may never get there I know it's gonna take time

I got things on my mind
I'm saying some things on my mind
How am I using my time? How am I using my rhymes

I Gotta say things on my mind
I'm gonna say things on my mind
How am I using my time? How am I using my life?

MY FAVORITE THINGS -- Chris Botti, John Clayton, Yo Yo Ma ---- At least once or twice a day (sometimes hourly) Siriusly Sinatra satellite radio features trumpet great Chris Botti. Sometimes he is credited, as a moment ago “Chris Botti and Steven Tyler – SMILE.” Sometimes he isn't credited, as on tracks he has produced for singers: overnight it was two by Gladys Knight, “I'll Be Seeing You” and “But Not For Me' – both arranged by Chris Botti's Grammy winning pianist Billy Childs. I was guided to a 'chamber orchestra performance' of my favorite composer's MY FAVORITE THINGS from The Sound of Music, including a great arranger in his own right:

John Clayton: a bass player who started out “age 16 as a student of Ray Brown” and has gone on to arrange for the greatest living artists, including Diana Krall and Chris Botti. In a moment, a video of him with Yo Yo Ma (cello) and Chris Botti and a couple of Chris's best Grammy winning band members, pianist/arranger Billy Childs and drummer extraordinaire, Billy Killson. A chamber-orchestra style 'variations' on MY FAVORITE THINGS. My favorite such performance since Sinatra's work with the “Hollywood String Quartet.” That one in a moment.

First, the bass player, John Clayton. Advising us (not just young bass players) on the best way to deal with the inevitable negativity we all of us will meet: “Bring your light” to bear on the situation – your love, your own spirit of giving, to illumine others.

Thanks, Yo Yo Ma for this 'chamber orchestra' four minute recording that prompted this reflection.

Yo-Yo Ma, I just want to thank you personally for all of your various gifts to the world. I have immensely enjoyed your classical works, your work with and in the Goat Rodeo Sessions, other incredible duo and trio work with a wide variety of masterful musicians as well. Maybe my favorite though owing to my love of music and instruments from around the world and other counties and cultures is the amazing Silkroad Ensemble you founded and the beautiful & interesting music, musicians and instruments the Silkroad Ensemble brought to me and the rest of the world. I am so thankful that you stepped outside of your classical music & cello realm and brought forth the virtuosity and beauty of such stellar music and musicians in multiple forums and formats.....what a beautiful soul you have in that you wanted and needed to get involved in and share such incredible musical experiences. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Kip
