Cary Lynn Javes
Zager & Evans Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Walking along by the moss-covered river rocks
By the tree where the old tire hangs
I looked down in the gleaming of your sun
And saw the footprints of a memory, and my heart sang

Cary Lynn, Cary Lynn Javes
Do you remember us sitting in the shade?
I gave you a hot coat in a sack
You gave me a flat rock back

Standing here by this cracked, white water fountain
I can remember when it was new
You used to wonder where the water was coming from
That is until I met you

Cary Lynn, Cary Lynn Javes
I used to think you were the dumbest person ever made
I told you the pipes were running underground
You laughed and said: "See you around"

Flying high on a silver-spider ferris wheel
Making wind over Long County fair
I looked up at the stars that I was closer to
And thanked the wind for running fingers through my hair

Cary Lynn, Cary Lynn Javes
Do you remember us in the fair parade?
I gave you a kiss behind the wagon rack
You gave me two kisses back

I'm getting older as all folks do
I'm thinking back; I'm thinking of you
At my table, my family sits waiting
Today's my birthday and we're all celebrating

Cary Lynn, Cary Lynn Javes
I bet you never guessed the wish I made
You used to tell me birthday wishes came true
But then you said that you loved me too

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Zager & Evans's song "Cary Lynn Javes" depict a nostalgic trip down memory lane. It speaks about a young man reminiscing about his past experiences with his past lover, Cary Lynn Javes. The song highlights how the singer is looking back at significant moments of their time together, and the memories of Cary have become etched in his heart. The lyrics begin by talking about walking along the moss-covered river rocks near an old tire where Cary Lynn and the singer spent time together. The singer looks down and sees the footprints of the memory of their time together, and his heart sings.

The middle part of the song refers to a cracked, white fountain where Cary Lynn and the singer had a conversation about where the water is coming from. The singer remembers his initial perception of Cary as the dumbest person ever made, but she proved him wrong. The part seems to be a reflection of the growth in their relationship. The last part of the song mentions the Long County fair. The singer and Cary Lynn rode the silver-spider Ferris wheel and recalls the feeling of making wind. They shared a kiss in the fair parade, and the singer thanks Cary for the memories. He is now significantly older and sitting at the table with his family celebrating his birthday but cannot help but think of Cary Lynn.

Music has a power to take us back in time. I heard the chorus fleetingly in December 1969 on my first visit to a place which became really special and was always looking for the song itself. I Just found it after 53 years. I'm 19 again, I tell you.

@deepskyal

My gosh....I had this song memorized back then. I'm 58 now and still brings shivers to me. Thanks for posting this.

@crossroads666

Thank you! I played the bass on this song, and it was one of my favorites!

@@crossroads666 hello Mark I know it's 7 months down the road but I had to comment. This song has bitter sweet memories for me as i played it in a bar band with my twin sister . Thanks for that overall sound, I can remember everybody saying wow what was that. I lost her in a car accident when she was 26. The rest of us never played as a band again we just couldn't do it anymore, this brings memories flooding back everytime I hear it. Of all the songs we covered this was her absolute favourite and that makes me smile. She always used to say OK guys I'm happy you can play Blue Canadian Rockies now!
