Rich Lips
blink-182 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Please, mom
You ground me all the time
I know that I was right
All along

And I'm hoping
Remember I'm a kid
I know not what I did
Just having fun

You couldn't wait for something new
And yesterday I thought of you
It left me to think as if I couldn't walk away
It's too late, I fell through

Nothing to lose
A boy who went out when he finished all his chores
Nothing to do
They can't trust me because I blew it once before

Shit, dad
Please don't kick my ass
I know I've seen you trashed
At least one time

Can I blame it
On one of my dumb friends
It's been awhile
Since I have used that line

You couldn't wait for something new
And yesterday I thought of you
It left me to think as if I couldn't walk away
It's too late, I fell through

Nothing to lose
A boy who went out when he finished all his chores
Nothing to do
They can't trust me because I blew it once before

(Alright)

Nothing to lose
A boy who went out when he finished all his chores

Nothing to do
They can't trust me because I blew it once before

Overall Meaning

The song "Rich Lips" by Blink-182 is about the struggles of adolescence and trying to navigate the rules set by parents. The opening lyrics are directed towards the singer's mother, who constantly grounds him, even though he believes he did nothing wrong. The singer is still a kid and is just having fun, but his mother does not understand that. The line "And I'm hoping, remember I'm a kid, I know not what I did, just having fun," perfectly captures the essence of the song, showing that the singer is still young and trying to have fun but is constantly being punished for it.

The second half of the song is directed towards the singer's father. The singer addresses him with "shit, dad" showing that he is frustrated and possibly in trouble. He asks if he can blame his actions on his friends, as it has been a while since he has used that excuse. The chorus "nothing to lose, a boy who went out when he finished all his chores, nothing to do, they can't trust me because I blew it once before," shows how the singer feels trapped and misunderstood. He has nothing to lose, as he has already lost his parent's trust, which leads to him acting out even more, creating a cycle of rebellion and punishment.

Overall, Blink-182 perfectly captures the angsty, rebellious feelings of adolescence in "Rich Lips".

That's what it says on the back but it says the right name on the inside of the case. They had to censor the name for the outer label.

It was 2 live shows and they took the best from both shows, put the songs in order, and like every single live album EVER, they mixed it and made it sound better and cleaner for production/distribution. It’s really them playing their instruments, shocker! Lol all in good fun. Some people take this too seriously. Do you like the songs? Then good, blink did their job.
