Room for Squares is the first major-label album by John Mayer, released commercially on September 18, 2001. The album's title is an inside joke/reference to Hank Mobley's No Room for Squares album. Most of the songs from the album were written by Mayer; however, three of the songs, "No Such Thing", "Neon", and "Love Song for No One", were all co-written with Clay Cook, with whom Mayer had a duo group known as "The LoFi Masters". The album was relatively unknown at its time of release, but it became more well-known through word of mouth and Mayer's touring. @Squirrelly Temple I’m actually the wrong person to challenge. How much do you want to bet? I’d bet 100k if you’re willing…I know you won’t so I’ll send you a video anyway. Don’t assume just because someone is posting on the internet that they don’t know what they’re doing.

We clearly have a different definition of what beginner, intermediate, etc is but I’ll admit I was probably wrong and that it’s closer to advanced. Most importantly it’s a great song for an aspiring student.

I’ll still take that bet if you want.

Wth are you talking about? This is an extremely difficult song, way beyond intermediate. No beginner could even attempt something like this. The chord progression is very complicated and the rhythm is tricky. I bet you can't play it.

@Homer G There’s generally three reasons why something is tricky to play. One is the obvious it’s fast or precise…technically hard to play. This song doesn’t really fall into that category. Next is a difficult rhythm…this song definitely has a lot going rhythmically. Syncopated strumming and hits and it goes to half time at one point. What’s most difficult about the song is the form…it has a lot of chords and if you don’t understand their function they will almost seem random. You’re in E but then it goes to Emin, then to F#7, the chorus starts on Amin, and if you don’t know the role of each chord it it’s enough to make your head spin. What I mean by chord function is the number system is I major, vi min, II maj, etc. Here in Nashville we write them with regular numbers and not Roman numerals but i digress! The chorus is A min D7 Emaj or iv bVII I. For us music school geeks( and John was certainly one of them) that’s known as a back door ii V, a cadence often seen in jazz tunes. As soon as we hear the chorus we know the flavor of the cadence and the exactly what those chords are. Every part of the song has a recognizable chord progression if you you understand theoretically what’s going on. If you don’t get the theory it will require lots of memorization on top of the tricky rhythm…making it really hard to play.

I’ve been teaching over 20 years now(damn it can’t really be that long!). Let me know if you’d like to do a lesson…we could break down all the chords, analyze them etc!

I’m 23 now. When I was 4 - 8 years old my mom would drive me to my grandparents pool 4 or 5 days a week. She would play this song every time. This song came on my phone while I was sitting at work yesterday. I’m a person who always holds back his emotions. I cry maybe once every couple years. Well… yesterday sitting in work with about 100 people around me I started crying in front of my 100 coworkers. This song brought me back to the best years of my life. An innocent kid, riding in the car with my mom and sisters on the way to swim at our grandparents on a sunny summer day. My mom singing this song in the drivers seat while we all tried to sing along. I would do anything to go back and relieve those years of my life. I love you with all my heart mom. I always will, even if I don’t always show it.

I remember hearing this on the radio back in early 2001. I was at work and I remember hearing all the very same music all the time and then this was the only song that stuck out. I remember the very first time it dissected itself in my brain like osmosis. And when I really payed attention to it I became a fan. I don't like all his music but I am a fan. Fell in love with the song ever since it first came out on the radio. When I first got my guitar, I spent a lot of nights practicing this song. And when I kind of felt down and lost during my twenties, I played this song for comfort. I always tend to play this song whenever friends invite me over to play a few songs in their gigs. Among the many songs I've practiced, I have never forgotten or lost track of the chords and tabs of this one.

I remember being 6 years old when this song released. My brother and I shared a room and we always left the radio on at night. We were on summer vacation and would challenge each other to stay up all night. This song would come on constantly and I never become tired of it. I was in junior high when this song came out...I remember not being interested because my mom liked John Mayer. Then a few months ago I heard it on a playlist, and I realized I had never actually LISTENED to it. never really knew that much songs from john, i was a casual fan that found out about him from my sister, and well when New Light came out it gave me something to jam at while in Hong Kong. This has def got to be his best song yet and guilty one of my fav songs atm, appreciate this man he’s always been an inspiration to keep me esp now that i’ve been getting into acoustics lately hopefully starting electric soon

I knew I liked this song the first time I heard it, but it took a few more years for me to realize just how much.
Now, if you'll all excuse me, I need to go back to my old high school and run through the halls screaming at the top of my lungs that life is really about something much better.

I was starting high school in 2002-2003 when I heard this for the first time and it reminded me of one of my teachers, Mr. Goldberg, who always told me and my class to get ready for the real world as we were getting ready to graduate from middle school and transition into high school. I will never forget my friends from those days or from my high school days thanks to this song.

Not sure if you guys have ever watched The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, but the first opening song has a similar base chord progression to this. But while this is very chilled out and relaxed, but fun sounding, that song was more whimsical and exciting and it seemed to be based around exploring the world.
