In 2005, Scott Weiland would announce that Velvet Revolver was working on its second studio album, and that it was planned to be a concept album. As to whether those plans ever got very far, they were nevertheless scrapped. The band would end up working with producer Rick Rubin (known for artists such as Beastie Boys, Aerosmith, Metallica, Rage Against the Machine) at first, but would end up instead working with producer Brendan O'Brien, who had previously worked with Scott Weiland's then former band Stone Temple Pilots alongside other 90s rock acts, including Soundgarden and Pearl Jam.
Libertad would be a commercial disappointment for the band in comparison to their debut album Contraband, which had been certified 2x platinum by the RIAA in both Canada and the United States. Libertad would only be certified Gold in Canada and Silver in the United States.
Libertad would be the only Velvet Revolver album and one of three albums that late frontman Scott Weiland would admit to writing while sober, with the other two albums being Stone Temple Pilots' Core and their 2010 self-titled album.
Unlike their previous album Contraband, Libertad would only have three singles, those being She Builds Quick Machines, The Last Fight, and Get Out the Door.
