After releasing six studio albums, including best-selling records The Real Thing (1989) and Angel Dust (1992), Faith No More officially announced its breakup on April 20, 1998. The band has since reunited, conducting The Second Coming Tour between 2009 and 2010, and releasing its seventh studio album, Sol Invictus, in May 2015. After the touring cycle of Sol Invictus, Faith No More went on hiatus once again. In November 2019, the band announced that it would reunite to embark on a 2020 UK and European tour, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this was postponed. Touring was due to recommence with a brief US tour in September 2021, followed by the previously postponed UK and Europe dates in June 2022, but all tour dates were cancelled with Patton citing mental health reasons.

If you can't, then it doesn't matter anyway
You will never understand it 'cause it happens too fast
And it feels so good, it's like walking on glass
It's so cool, it's so hip, it's alright
It's so groovy, it's outta sight
You can touch it, smell it, taste it so sweet
But it makes no difference 'cause it knocks you off your feet
You want it all but you can't have it
It's cryin', bleedin', lying on the floor
So you lay down on it and you do it some more
You've got to share it, so you dare it
Then you bare it and you tear it
You want it all but you can't have it
It's in your face but you can't grab it
It's alive, afraid, a lie, a sin
It's magic, it's tragic, it's a loss, it's a win
It's dark, it's moist, it's a bitter pain
It's sad it happened and it's a shame
You want it all but you can't have it
It's in your face but you can't grab it
What is it?
It's it
What is it?
It's it
What is it?
It's it
What is it?
It's it

The lyrics of Faith No More's song "Epic" are quite cryptic and can be interpreted in many ways. It appears to be a critique of a society that is obsessed with instant gratification and addicted to pleasure. The opening lines suggest that this culture of immediate pleasure is so intense that it’s difficult to see, feel, or hear anything else. Those who are not part of this culture won't understand it as it happens too fast. Even though it feels good, the transitory nature of this instant gratification is hinted at with the imagery of walking on glass.
The chorus, “You want it all but you can't have it, it's in your face but you can't grab it”, highlights a sense of frustration about this culture of instant gratification, where anything you want is just out of reach, perpetually tantalizing yet unattainable. The next verse further emphasizes the destructive nature of this culture of instant gratification - where one indulges in things despite the harm it causes, seeking the next 'fix' of pleasure. The last verse points to the tragedy of this culture and the loss that it causes. It's a critique of a society that's willing to sacrifice everything for the sake of pleasure.
