Visions was met with critical acclaim and featured on many Best Albums of 2012 lists. The Guardian named Visions the second best album of 2012, calling it "a masterpiece in gonzo pop that is weird, original and derivative at the same time". The NME ranked the album at number two on its 50 Best Albums of 2012 list, while naming their best known songs "Oblivion" and "Genesis" the sixth and sixteenth best tracks of 2012, respectively. The follow-up to Visions, Art Angels, featured a more pop-oriented sound and was released in 2015. It includes the singles "Kill v. Maim" and "Flesh Without Blood" amongst others. It saw Boucher further developing their skills as a producer, songwriter and also as a visual artist, seeing as they directed and produced multiple videos for the majority of the songs from the album, as well as designing the respective artwork(s) and merchandise. Grimes embarked on the Acid Reign Tour throughout Asia and Europe in 2016, along with friends and collaborators HANA and Aristophanes.
In February 2018, Grimes wrote on Instagram, "well no music any time soon after all." Boucher stated that this first album would be "highly collaborative and [characterized by] most glorious light", with the second highlighting themes of "pure darkness and chaos".

Grimes Lyrics
Another walk about after dark
It's my point of view
'Cause someone could break your neck
Coming up behind you, always coming and you'd never have a clue
I never look behind, all the time
I will wait forever, always looking straight
Thinking, counting, all the hours you wait
(Ooh, ah) (la, la, la, la, la)
See you on a dark night (ooh, ah)
See you on a dark night (ooh, ah) (la, la, la, la, la)
See you on a dark night
See you on a dark night
And no, I'm not a jerk, I would ask
If you could help me out
It's hard to understand
'Cause when you're really by yourself
It's hard to find someone to hold your hand
And now it's good to be tough with me
But I will wait forever
I need someone now to look into my eyes and tell me
"Girl, you know you gotta watch your health"
To look into my eyes and tell me
La, la, la, la, la
To look into my eyes and tell me
La, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la
Oh, oh
Oh, oh
See you on a dark night
See you on a dark night (oh)
See you on a dark night (oh)
See you on a dark night (oh)
See you on a dark night (oh)
See you on a dark night (oh)
See you on a dark night (oh)
See you on a dark night (ooh, ah)
See you on a dark night (ooh, ah)
See you on a dark night (ooh, ah) (la, la, la, la, la)
See you on a dark night (ooh, ah) (oh, oh)

Violent encounter with a male
Being a proxy for his untangled homoeroticism
Dirty rotten Pulp pressed into watery iris
Bone gnash at cartilage
Some sort of molecule collider
Flying thru the air, look at big bird, big butterfly, big truck, and a little snuck in the jam of all in between making so much sense - a one light red kidney bean
Horrid, putrid, Pisces - being gulped down by Virgo Cohen, Virgo moon Lou Reed, a, terrorize popcorns and taper thin that one unseasonal acorn, mundanely rapping in boomerang Swedish
