1. (Stylized "LUMP") is a collaboration between English folk artist Laura Marling and Mike Lindsay of the bands Tuung and Throws. Their self-titled debut album is out June 1, 2018.
Lindsay began working on music outside of his respective bands, but eventually found himself in need of a vocalist. Marling and Lindsay met at a Neil Young show where Marling was appearing as the support act. They were both mutual fans of each other's work, and thus the Lump project was born.
Lyrically, Marling was inspired by the poetry of Edward Lear and Ivor Cutler, and the Surrealist movement. Musically, the duo married the modern folk of Marling's output and the folktronica of Lindsay's band Tunng. Their self-titled debut record was released in 2018 and was preceded by the lead single "Curse of the Contemporary." Following the release, they went back to working on their own material, with Marling issuing her seventh album, 2020's Song for Our Daughter, and Lindsay producing albums for Dana Gavanski and Douglas Dare, as well as issuing Tunng's eighth release, Dead Club. Reconvening in 2020 at Lindsay's studios in Margate, England, the duo started working on the follow-up to their debut, with the resulting album, Animal, arriving in mid-2021.
2. Lump do not like to be described...but if forced to describe their music, it would be safe to say that Lump are equal parts rock and funk with a whole bunch of other styles all lumped together. Could that be the story behind the band's name? Who knows. All that is evident is that Lump themselves don't like to be described. See for yourself on Lump's website where they refer to themselves as sounding like Gang of Four and The Meters break dancing with Rip Taylor during a nursing home fire drill! Consisting of:
Leo Thevenot - guitar, vocals
A.P. Gonzalez - drums
Michael Joseph - bass, trumpet, toy plane, trombone, vocals
Ben Ellman - tenor & baritone sax, vocals
3. The third is from Australia, and play a brand of hard rock similar in nature to Alice in Chains, Sevendaust, AC/DC, and others.
4. The fourth is from the hideously cold north of Finland. Not to be confused with a certain gentleman with releases on Switzerland's Mental Groove. He’s submerged in a mysterious dub dimension where nothing really is what it seems to be - or rather sounds to be.
His music is full of tiny textures and sounds that together form the quirky sounds of Lump. Tracks are mixed live with a 16 track mixer before final mix on a computer. Many elements are played live without sequencing - this adds an organic dubby warmth to his music. He is always working on new ways to fool his own ears.
Lump's daily experimentation with animation, somehow extends to his music. Lump often begins with a Basic Channel template - then turning everything upside down, and one ends up with a unique, quicky and damn right infectious piece of sheer brilliance.
