Summer in the City
The Lovin' Spoonful Lyrics

Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck gettin' dirty and gritty
Been down, isn't it a pity?
Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city
All around, people lookin' half dead
Walkin' on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head

But at night, it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come on, come on, and dance all night
Despite the heat, it'll be alright
And babe, don't you know it's a pity
The days can't be like the nights
In the summer in the city
In the summer in the city

Cool town, evening in the city
Dressed so fine and lookin' so pretty
Cool cat lookin' for a kitty
Gonna look in every corner of the city
'Til I'm wheezing like a bus stop
Runnin' upstairs, gonna meet you on the rooftop

But at night, it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come on, come on, and dance all night
Despite the heat, it'll be alright
And babe, don't you know it's a pity
The days can't be like the nights
In the summer in the city
In the summer in the city

Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck gettin' dirty and gritty
Been down, isn't it a pity?
Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city
All around, people lookin' half dead
Walkin' on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head

But at night, it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come on, come on, and dance all night
Despite the heat, it'll be alright
And babe, don't you know it's a pity
The days can't be like the nights
In the summer in the city
In the summer in the city

@namcat53 There WAS air conditioning, yes. But it was kind of expensive to have and use and for that reason comparatively few people had it. Most people back then were just used to living without it.

I didn't buy my first air conditioner until I was 30, in 1994 - a window unit that I actually used very little. Prior to that, I just had a fan or two. Even today, the one I have only gets used during the very hottest portion of the season.

If you bought a car in the 1960s or 1970s, air conditioning was an expensive option - even in full-sized Buicks and Fords and Oldsmobiles.
Today? Standard equipment across the entire line, and in most cases there isn't even an option for a factory delete.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think all new houses built today are set up for central air.

It was a costly luxury in the 1960s. It's almost considered a necessity now.

Всегда думал, что это песня Джо Кокера, а оказывается ее пел двойник Джона Леннона в 60-х годах...
