Danny Boy
Celtic Woman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side
The summer's gone, and all the roses falling
'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide.

But come ye back when summer's in the meadow
Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow
'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow
Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so.

But when he come, and all the flowers are dying
If I am dead, as dead I well may be
You'll come and find the place where I am lying
And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me.

And I shall hear, tho' soft you tread above me
And all my grave will warm and sweeter be
For you will bend and tell me that you love me
And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me.

Overall Meaning

Celtic Woman's "Danny Boy" is a poignant song about a lover's separation. The song is about Danny, who is leaving his lover in order to venture beyond the glens and mountainside of Ireland. The lyrics symbolize the changing of the seasons from summer to autumn, indicating an inevitable separation. The first verse sets a melancholic and haunting tone as the pipes are calling Danny home. It conveys the sense of looking forward to a reunion in the future, but also the sadness of the present moment. The second verse emphasizes the open invitation for Danny to return, but also highlights the steadfastness of his lover's love. The song conveys the sense of longing and the desire to be with one's loved ones, even when separated by immense distances.

The third verse is the most emotional of all. It is a foreboding omen of death, and the line "If I am dead, as dead I well may be” is a reminder that life is fleeting and that one must make the most of the time one has. It conveys the sense of a love that transcends death, as the singer requests the assurance that her lover will remember her and pray for her after she has passed away. Finally, in the last verse, the singer dreams of Danny visiting her grave to profess his love. The final lines are both heartbreaking and hopeful, as the singer sleeps in peace in the hope of being united with Danny again.

Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
Danny, hear the music from the Scottish bagpipe that echoes from the hills, even to the slopes of the mountains.

From glen to glen, and down the mountain side
The sound of the bagpipe reverberates from the valleys and down the slopes of the mountains.

The summer's gone, and all the roses falling
The summer days have gone, and the beautiful red roses are also falling.

'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide.
Danny, it is time for you to leave, and I must stay here.

But come ye back when summer's in the meadow
Come back to me when nature is at its peak in the Meadow.

Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow
Or come back to me when the valley is fully silent and white with the beautiful snow.

'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow
Whether it’s sunny or shady outside, I will be waiting for you, Danny.

Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so.
Danny, I adore and care about you so much.

But when he come, and all the flowers are dying
But when you return, and all the lovely flowers have faded and died,

If I am dead, as dead I well may be
Even if I have passed away by that time,

You'll come and find the place where I am lying
Please find me resting place and come to me.

And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me.
Please kneel down in prayer for my soul at my grave.

And I shall hear, tho' soft you tread above me
Even though you walk quietly over my head, I shall hear you.

And all my grave will warm and sweeter be
When you visit me, you will warm my heart and make my resting place a much nicer place.

For you will bend and tell me that you love me
You will bend down to where I rest and say that you love me.

And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me.
After that, I shall rest in peace knowing that you love me, until we meet again.

"Danny Boy"

Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side
The summer's gone, and all the roses falling
It's you, it's you must go and I must bide.

But come ye back when summer's in the meadow
Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow
It's I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow
Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so.

But when ye come, and all the flow'rs are dying
If I am dead, as dead I well may be
You'll come and find the place where I am lying
And kneel and say an ave there for me.

And I shall hear, though soft you tread above me
And all my grave will warmer, sweeter be
For you will bend and tell me that you love me

You don't need Irish blood to tear on this one,I am 100% Italian and a 100 year old Irishman just passed away at my mom's assisted living place today,he was strong ,he was joyful, and he sang this song with heart and fervor like no young man,his name was Tom and he was so nice to mom nd when he sang it wasn't that he was Irish or Italian ,it was his character that mattered,RIP my friend!

Oh, I know. Beautiful song!

This was my father's favourite song. He had a beautiful tenor voice and would sing this just for the joy of singing it. He passed 21 years ago. I lost my son Daniel thirteen years ago. I can't hear this song without remembering them. On my right arm is a tattoo of a Celtic harp surrounded by roses and on a banner across it are the notes for the last line of this song. This is the most beautiful rendition I have ever heard and I wish so much that I could share it with them.

Doug.. Im sorry. I can't imagine what it would be to lose my son. Im sorry. Good you appreciate the beauty still left in the world.
