Palaces of Montezuma
Grinderman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Psychedelic invocations
Of Mata Hari at the station
I give to you
A Java princess of Hindu Birth
A woman of flesh, a child of the earth
I give to you
The hanging gardens of Babylon
Miles Davis, the black unicorn
I give to you
The palaces of Montezuma
And the gardens of Akbar's tomb
I give to you
The Spider Goddess and the Needle Boy
The slave-dwarves they employ
I give to you
A custard-coloured super-dream
Of Ali McGraw and Steve McQueen
I give to you

C'mon baby, let's get out of the cold
And gimme, gimmme, gimme your precious love for me to hold

The epic of Gilgamesh
A pretty little black A-line dress
I give to you
The spinal cord of JFK
Wrapped in Marilyn Monroe's negligee
I give to you
I want nothing in return
Just the softest little breathless word
I ask of you
A word contained in a grain of sand
That can barely walk, can't even stand
I ask of you

C'mon baby, let's get out of the cold
And gimme, gimme, gimme your precious love for me to hold
C'mon baby, come out of the cold
And gimme, gimme, gimme your precious love for me to hold

C'mon
Yeah c'mon
Yeah c'mon
Yeah c'mon
Yeah c'mon
Yeah c'mon
Yeah c'mon
Yeah c'mon
Yeah c'mon
Yeah c'mon
Give it to me
Give it to me
Yeah give it to me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Grinderman's Palaces of Montezuma are a lyrical homage to the beauty and diversity of the world, a tribute to the power of love, and a celebration of life itself. Nick Cave's lyrics paint vivid, psychedelic imagery referencing some of history's most awe-inspiring places and people, including Babylon, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Akbar's tomb, and Montezuma's palaces. Mata Hari, Java Princess, Spider Goddess, and the Needle boy are all allusions to historical and mythological figures, adding to the song's mystical and enigmatic ambiance.

The lyrics paint a picture of a world where everything is interconnected and magical, where the ordinary is transformed into something extraordinary. Even the grotesque, like the "hanging gardens," is elevated to mystical proportions. The song's sense of wonder and awe is tempered by a yearning for connection, as Cave asks his lover to "give me your precious love for me to hold" and "just the softest little breathless word." The song's final lines, "Give it to me, give it to me, yeah give it to me," signify both a desire for intimacy and a call to embrace the beauty of life itself.

Grinderman's crowning glory. Blessings to you Nick, in your pain and peace to you and your family.

@paulelliott3220

The mighty Nick Cave and the magnificent Grinderman brought me here
Brilliant stuff

@murmurrrr

That's like walking into a McDonald's and saying McDonald's brought me here

@paulelliott3220

@@murmurrrr it’s a response to everyone who came from Burger Star or Wendy’s

@cynamonstudio

Holy Lord in heaven, I am truly blessed to have a chance to listen to this masterpiece.

@DiamorphineDeath

This is what romance should be, lyrically speaking. "The Epic of Gilgamesh, A pretty little black A-line dress," this line always gets me. Seems only Nick Cave could combine those two into a coherent yet romantic concept. Brilliant.

@maxdoubt6504

Did that lyrics momentarily escape him? Or did he just try a different timing?

@DCoyote67

this version of the song (a truly masterpiece) kicks ass - drums, bass, voices and the guitars... everything seems perfect to me... and the guitar solo of warren ellis is not of this world!

@biancachristie

DCoyote67 yeah—this is my go to version too! I love the album, but this one serves even more of that Velvet Underground/Sonic Youth/Jesus & Mary Chain/Dinosaur Jr/Happy Mondays/Brian Jonestown Massacre/etc realness that’s packed into the original recording. And those lyrics! Nick’s lyrics are always on point, but here he’s on fire.

@2ndnickthegreek992

God, that's what music must be. Soul, flesh, blood and some rocking facial hair!
