Yellow Magic Orchestra Lyrics

CUE
(H. Hosono / Y. Takahashi)
Y.M.O. (Yellow Magic Orchestra) (Japan)

*Give me a cue
I think I've nearly found you
Give me a cue
I can see clues all around me

The sound of music
The crying of the air

*REPEAT

The sound of music
The echo of the earth
I'm sick and tired of the same old chaos
Must be a way to get out of this cul-de-sac

*REPEAT

The sound of music
The sound of my own voice

Overall Meaning

The song "Cue" by Yellow Magic Orchestra (Y.M.O.) begins with the plea for a cue, almost as if the singer is searching for direction or guidance. He admits to having come close to finding what he is looking for, but still needs a signal or a hint. He then mentions seeing clues all around him, indicating that whatever he's looking for is not completely elusive.

The first stanza is followed by a repetition of the sound of music, this time followed by "the crying of the air." This sorrowful tone could be interpreted as a reflection of the singer's inward feelings of disappointment and frustration. The second stanza similarly repeats the sound of music, this time following it with "the echo of the earth," perhaps suggesting that despite the chaos surrounding him, there is still something stable and constant to be found in nature.

The final line, "the sound of my own voice," is particularly poignant. It seems to hint at a need for self-expression and self-validation, as if the singer has been seeking guidance from outside sources when he already possesses the tools he needs within himself. The song as a whole speaks to the universal experience of feeling lost or stuck, while also offering the possibility of salvation through music and connection to the natural world.

Beautiful song. Such warmth, cannot expect this from any other synthpop band

@Wilss

I could kind of imagine Phil Oakey singing this. Gives me 'Electric Dreams' vibes. Maybe this influenced it. Maybe not 😄
