Nothing's Gonna Hurt You Baby
Cigarettes After Sex Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Whispered something in your ear
It was a perverted thing to say
But I said it anyway
Made you smile and look away

Nothing's gonna hurt you, baby
As long as you're with me, you'll be just fine
Nothing's gonna hurt you, baby
Nothing's gonna take you from my side

When we dance in my living room
To that silly '90s R&B
When we have a drink or three
Always ends in a hazy shower scene

Nothing's gonna hurt you, baby
As long as you're with me, you'll be just fine
Nothing's gonna hurt you, baby
Nothing's gonna take you from my side

And we laugh into the microphone and sing
With our sunglasses on, to our favorite songs

And we're laughing in the microphone and singing
With our sunglasses on, to our favorite songs

Nothing's gonna hurt you, baby
Nothing's gonna take you from my side

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Cigarettes After Sex's song Nothing's Gonna Hurt You Baby convey a message of protection, love, and security. The song is a romantic plea for a loved one to trust and believe that nothing will harm them as long as they are together. The first stanza begins with a confession made to the loved one, wherein the singer admits to saying something perverted, but the implication is that this was done playfully and in intimacy, and that it succeeded in bringing a smile to the loved one's face, despite the pervertedness of the words. The second stanza describes moments of shared intimate pleasure with the loved one, dancing in the living room to a '90s R&B song and drinking together, and it is clear that the singer cherishes these moments.

The chorus is the most important part of the song, and it repeats the same lines twice. The message of the chorus is a promise of protection, as the singer clarifies that nothing can harm the loved one as long as the singer is with them. The final stanza reiterates the importance of shared pleasures, as the pair laughs and sings along to songs with sunglasses on. In essence, the song is a declaration of love and loyalty from speaker to partner, with the focus on security and shared moments of happiness.

My wife passed two days ago. The day we met was the first day of our lives. She survived the worst emotional, psychological, physical, and sexual abuse and trauma imaginable.

We were both homeless when we met. Addicts. I hadn’t been able to afford anti-psychotics to treat my schizophrenia for nearly a decade. I didn’t live in this world, but built cities in my mind in which I could escape.

We were nothing without each other; together we were unstoppable. We kicked our substance abuse problems without even trying; and how not when, for the first time in our lives, we had nothing to escape? Decades of cities, walls, fortresses, and barricades I’d constructed in my mind to hide in were washed away the first day we met. Her smile, but especially her eyes, drowned out the deafening cacophony that had so relentlessly harried me.

Out of this indifferent world we carved out a modest corner to call our own. We wanted for nothing but time. We found our peace. When her PTSD was triggered, night terrors tore her from sleep; when the demons baying came for me we’d shut all the world out and sing to one another.

I almost always carried her through on “Hands Down” by The Greeting Committee. She would always sing “Nothing's Gonna Hurt You Baby” to me while, of course, proudly reminding the demons that they were nothing without me and that they couldn’t have me anymore, because I was possessed by an angel.

So now to save the money necessary to deliver her ashes to the Chesapeake Bay and the Redwoods that I may joyously quit this world for whatever place she’s waiting for me.
