Originally calling themselves the A Cappella Circle when they were at the University of Waseda, they changed their name to the Gospellers in 1991 after graduating. They spent the next ten years working towards national recognition, releasing 24 singles and 9 albums during that time. They became the first complete a cappella group to be in the top 3 of the Oricon chart ranking in Japan with their song, "HITORI".
In early 2006, the group made a side-project release, Gosperats, featuring the members in blackface and singing with a jazzier accompaniment Rats & Star's member Masayuki Suzuki, Nobuyoshi Kuwano and Yoshio Sato. Many of the western Gospeller fans were upset about the outrage it caused on some discussion forums, many non-fans felt offended by the blackface the group members had chosen to take on. Fortunately, this project was announced as a side-project and released only one album under its name.
The members of Gospellers are now producers for several Japanese artists, including Tatsuya Ishii and Masayuki Suzuki. (This text has been cited from Wikipedia)
It should've been me
ゴスペラーズ Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Gives me the bold permission
to believe
I must say somethin'
that's been naggin'
I don't mean to be braggin'
But baby, please, listen
Whoa, whoa
that loved you
All this
It should've been me
that loved you
All this time
So when you look
inside the mirror
Does it get any clearer
somethin's wrong
Does he ever go past the surface
Down where your real hurt is
Down below your pretty face
Whoa, whoa
It should've been me
that loved you
All this
It should've been me
that loved you
All this time
So when your heart goes
what's the matter
I think I know the answer
You know it's true everything
I told you baby
Whoa, whoa
It should've been me
that loved you
All this
It should've been me
that loved you
All this time
The lyrics to ゴスペラーズ's song "It should've been me" express the regret and longing of the singer who believes that they should have been the one to love the person addressed in the song. The opening lines, "Just cause my silly intuition / Gives me the bold permission / to believe," indicate that the singer's intuition is urging them to speak their mind. They admit to feeling a nagging need to express themselves and assert that they don't intend to brag or boast. It is a plea for the person to listen to them.
The chorus, "It should've been me / that loved you / All this time," emphasizes the singer's conviction that they should have been the one to love the person being addressed. They question whether the person truly sees themselves clearly in the mirror, suggesting that there may be something wrong or missing in their current relationship. The lines, "Does he ever go past the surface / Down where your real hurt is / Down below your pretty face," imply that the singer believes they can provide a deeper and more understanding love.
The final verse reiterates the singer's belief that they know the answer when the person's heart questions what is wrong. The singer claims that everything they have told the person is true and that it should have been them who loved the person all along.
Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of missed opportunity and regret, as the singer believes that they were the one who should have been in a loving relationship with the person addressed in the song.
