She has been described as “the most famous female video game music composer in the world”. She has worked in the video game industry ever since graduating from the Osaka College of Music in 1988. From then until 1993, she worked for Capcom, where she composed wholly or in part the scores for 16 games, including Final Fight and Street Fighter II.

While working for Capcom, Shimomura contributed to the soundtracks of over 16 games, including the successful Street Fighter II, which she composed all but three pieces for. The first soundtrack she worked on at the company was for Samurai Sword in 1988. Final Fight, in 1989, was her first work to receive a separate soundtrack album release, on an album of music from several Capcom games. The first soundtrack album to exclusively feature her work came a year later for the soundtrack to Street Fighter II. While she began her tenure at Capcom working on games for video game consoles, by 1990 she had moved to the arcade game division. She was a member of the company's in-house band Alph Lyla, which played various Capcom game music, including pieces written by Shimomura. She performed live with the group on a few occasions, including playing piano during Alph Lyla's appearance at the 1992 Game Music Festival.

In 1993, Shimomura left Capcom to join another game company, Square (now Square Enix). She stated that the move was done because she was interested in writing "classical-style" music for fantasy role-playing games. While working for Capcom, she was in the arcade department and was unable to transfer to the console department to work on their role-playing video game series Breath of Fire, although she did contribute one track to the first game in the series. Her first project at the company was the score for the role-playing video game Live A Live in 1994. While she was working on the score to Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars the following year, she was asked to join Noriko Matsueda on the music to the futuristic strategy RPG Front Mission. Although she was overworked doing both scores and it was not the genre that she was interested in, she found herself unable to refuse after her first attempt to do so unexpectedly happened in the presence of the president of Square, Tetsuo Mizuno. These games were followed by Tobal No. 1, the last score she worked on with another composer for a decade.

Over the next few years, she composed the soundtrack to several games, including Parasite Eve and Legend of Mana. Of all her compositions, Shimomura considers the soundtrack to Legend of Mana the one that best expresses herself and the soundtrack remains Shimomura’s personal favourite. Parasite Eve on the PlayStation had the first soundtrack by Shimomura that included a vocal song, as it was the first game she had written for running on a console system that had the sound capability for one. In 2002 she wrote the score for Kingdom Hearts, which she has said is the most “special” soundtrack to her, as well as a turning point in her career; she named the soundtracks to Street Fighter II and Super Mario RPG as the other two significant points in her life as a composer.

Kingdom Hearts was wildly successful, shipping more than four million copies worldwide; Shimomura’s music was frequently cited as one of the highlights of the game, and the title track has been ranked as the fourth-best role-playing game title track of all time. The soundtrack has led to two albums of piano arrangements. Kingdom Hearts was the last soundtrack that she worked on at Square. After the release of Kingdom Hearts in 2002, Shimomura left Square for maternity leave, and began work as a freelancer in 2003. She has built on the work she did while at Square; since leaving she has composed or is composing music for eleven Kingdom Hearts games and Nintendo’s Mario & Luigi series. She has also worked on many other projects, such as Heroes of Mana and various Premium Arrange albums. On February 10 and 11, 2014, Shimomura played piano at a retrospective 25th anniversary concert at Tokyo FM Hall. She performed songs from games such as Kingdom Hearts, Live a Live, and Street Fighter II. During the Beware the Forest’s Mushrooms performance from Super Mario RPG, Shimomura was joined onstage by fellow game composer Yasunori Mitsuda, who played the Irish bouzouki. She is currently working on the score for Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III.

Her works have gained a great deal of popularity, and have been performed in multiple video game music concerts, including one, Sinfonia Drammatica, that was focused half on her “greatest hits” album, Drammatica: The Very Best of Yoko Shimomura, and half on the music of a previous concert. Music from several of her games have been published as arranged albums and as piano scores.

Melia is such a strong character, I really hope she gets more screen time with the DLC. She has endured a lot during her journey, had to make a lot of mature sacrifices, she outlived everyone she cared for, she got chained for an eternity forced to watch a world trapped in the endless now just to be freed and resume her Queen duty. I sometimes feel sad that RPGs don't have a proper endgame, where you can see a change after the final boss. Melia deserves some closure

After beating the main story, I thought the game was done hurting my heart.

But man, Melia’s entire quest was so beautiful and yet sad. To see such a familiar and nostalgic character all grown up and yet obviously carrying the weight of all her past experiences. And when this song kicks in at the end it’s just…. A gut punch right in the feels.

I’ll be honest I didn’t much care for Melia the first time I played Xenoblade 1. But now, looking back years later, she’s one of my favorites in the whole series. I hope we get to see more of her in the DLC or some future game.

Melia’s story is one of triumph. In the original game, she finally stood atop the hill, dignified, looking at the new world she helped create where she may lead her people in peace. @Brandon Ojeda Because the games can very easily be played in any order. A lot of people played 2 before playing 1, and now we have a lot of people starting with 3 before playing the other two. The scene in question is great and carries emotional weight, probably more if you've already played 1, yes, but also, you can just as easily see the scene in 3, then go back and play 1 and have that entire scene recontextualized for you.

Xenoblade in general works like that; you can go back to an earlier point and have everything you already saw completely recontextualized. For example, in Xenoblade 1, on your first playthrough it may not mean too much hearing Shulk explain how it feels like there's two conflicting voices in his head, but on a second playthrough now having the knowledge that Zanza has been inside him the whole time... the impact hits harder.

And you can apply this to playing these games "out of order" still. People who started with 3 can play just one of the games to find out how the worlds got split to begin with. People who started with 2 can play 1 to find out what that voice The Architect hears at the end means. This series being playable "backwards" like this is exactly what makes it so great and much more accessible to people who want to get into it, when the answer to "Where do I start?" is "Whatever you'd prefer."

After I finished the game I thought it wouldn't crush me emotionally but this scene... man

Meeting Nia again was great but it was like meeting a friend and being glad they didn't change despite their new work. It was good to see her but mostly for enjoyment of seeing sassy welsh catgirl again.

With Melia... it was cathartic. Seeing her as a proper queen, helping people, getting recognition after all the pain and misery she went through... and the party still acknowledging that and seeing how strong and wise she grew despite it. Telling how its okay for her to have happiness in her life and not just make constant sacrifices for the sake of others. Its like finally seeing her truly grow and become the successor to her father. Not even mentioning the flashback. Absolutely amazing.

It's weird how they seem to have worked this track out of all of them to be Melia-oriented as of late. Originally it played in two cutscenes in base XC1, one which was clearly about Shulk and Fiora, one which was also about those two but more from Melia's perspective. Then in Future Connected it plays four times, all of which are very much Melia cutscenes/quiet moments. And now it plays in another Melia cutscene in XC3.

Perhaps it's not so much a Shulk and Fiora piece of music any more, more just about 'Melia's companions' as a whole. That certainly fits the XC3 usage, and with a bit of reworking to include Tyrea it also fits most of the FC usages.

To be fair, it was always a bit odd that the track was called "Shulk and Fiora" in the first place since, aside from being used in a romantic cutscene between the two, is clearly just a more subdued (and beautiful) rearrangement of the game's title screen theme. That's always how I heard it instead of as a theme specifically about them. That's just me, though.
I do wish they would have come up with a more appropriate title for it, because it is definitely weird to see "Shulk and Fiora" on the track listing for Xenoblade 3 when neither of those characters are really in the game at all lol

The decision to make a track titled "Shulk and Fiora" be a rearrangement of the title theme imo comes from the fact that their relationship lies at the crux of the story. Without their relationship, the game's storyline is doomed to fail. Thematically, it works to associate this melody with that pair in particular.

Though, I do find the decision to then associate this song with Melia odd. I really thought the love triangle stuff in the first game was adding drama for the sake of drama - even though it could have been a lot worse. Melia and Fiora are still fantastic friends! - so seeing a song that isn't even supposed to be about her slowly shift TO being about her feels like a weird oversight. Low-key wish they made a partial rearrangement of the song for FC and XC3 to reflect Melia better instead of just being really distracting.

It's worth noting that in this scene where it plays in XC3, even though Melia remembers the faces of all her comrades from 1, it's distinctly Shulk and Fiora whose actual voices she remembers. In the Colony 9 portion of this quest, it's also Shulk and Fiora she's clearly reminded of when she encounters those two soldiers who she notes as being "joined at the hip since childhood."

Idk, just some food for thought. Before I was joking when I said "The song titled Shulk and Fiora plays in a Melia quest because she has two hands." But uhh. After having recently done that quest again and picking up on details like that... I'm starting to wonder if my comment I made as a joke might actually hold some weight.

As for its use in FC, I think it's because, as other commenters have pointed out, this song is an arrange of Xenoblade 1's main screen theme, and that's probably why it gets used there.

I think it's worth noting Drifting Soul was also generally used more for Malos and Mythra in XC2, but its lyrics definitely fit both of those characters AND Nia, so it's no surprise that by the time of this game, they settled on making it a Nia theme specifically.

The duel in chapter 4, the finale of chapters 5 and 6 and even the ending got me emotional and got me sobbing, but I never outright cried.
