Merry-Go-Round
(SNSD) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mary take me to the merry-go-round
(Merry-go-round) with this beautiful sound
Sing my song for you

He's like merry-go-round

He's like merry-go-round

He's like merry-go-round

He's like merry-go-round

If you ain't got two kids by 21
you're probably gonna die alone
at least thats what tradition told you.
And it don't matter if you don't believe, come' Sunday morning you best' be there in the front row like you're supposed to.
Same hurt in every heart.
Same trailer, different park.
Mama's hooked on Mary K
brothers' hooked on Mary Jane
daddy's hooked on Mary two doors down.
Mary Mary quite contrary we get bored so we get married
Just like dust we settle in this town.
On this broken merry go round and round where it stops nobody knows.
It was ain't slowin' down this merry go round.
We think the first times good enough
So we hold on to high school love
say we won't end up like our parents.
Tiny little boxes in a row, ain't what you want it's what you know
Just happy in the shoes you're wearing.
Same checks we're always cashing to buy a little more distraction.
Cause mama's hooked on Mary K
brothers' hooked on Mary Jane
daddy's hooked on Mary two doors down.
Mary Mary quite contrary we get bored so we get married
Just like dust we settle in this town.
On this broken merry go round and round and round we go where it stops nobody knows.
It ain't slowin' down this merry go round.
Marry, Marry, quite contrary, we're so bored until we're buried.
Just like dust we settle in this town on this broken merry go round.
Jack and Jill ran up the hill.
Jack burned out on booze and pills.
Marry had a little lamb.
Marry just don't give a damn no' more.

just my guess on the lyrics :)

If you ain't got two kids by 21,
You're probably gonna die alone
Least that's what tradition told you

And it don't matter if you don't believe,
Come Sunday morning, you best be there
In the front row, like you're supposed to

Same hurt in every heart
Same trailer, different park

Mama's hooked on Mary Kay
Brother's hooked on Mary Jane
Daddy's hooked on Mary two doors down
Mary, Mary quite contrary
We get bored, so, we get married
Just like dust, we settle in this town

On this broken merry go 'round and 'round and 'round we go
Where it stops nobody knows
And it ain't slowin' down
This merry go 'round

We think the first time's good enough
So, we hold on to high school love.
Sayin' we won't end up like our parents

Tiny little boxes in a row
Ain't what you want, it's what you know
Just happy in the shoes you're wearin'

Same checks we're always cashin'
To buy a little more distraction

'Cause mama's hooked on Mary Kay
Brother's hooked on Mary Jane
Daddy's hooked on Mary two doors down
Mary, Mary quite contrary
We get bored, so, we get married
Just like dust, we settle in this town

On this broken merry go 'round and 'round and 'round we go
Where it stops nobody knows
And it ain't slowin' down
This merry go 'round

Mary, Mary quite contrary
We're so bored until we're buried
Just like dust, we settle in this town
On this broken merry go 'round
Merry go 'round

Jack and Jill went up the hill
Jack burned out on booze and pills
And Mary had a little lamb
Mary just don't give a damn no more

The song has a great melody, but even more interesting is that it is very honest in its criticism of small town life. It seems to be in fashion, especially recently, for country stars to idealize rural life as somehow morally superior to an urban existence. It is a breathe of fresh air to see such candor about how the cultural expectations of "country folk" can be stifling and oppressive.

I still don't understand how this wasnt a hit. This song deserves the same amount as Little Big Town's Girl Crush. The best song she's every written imo

@RPGonline2

It gained some traction on country radio, I remember hearing it shortly after it was released and that's how I found out about Kacey, fell in love with her after that first listen! And it did receive repeated airplay for a while. But it is a disappointment how it wasn't a smash hit or even a blip on the radar beyond country radio. Kacey deserves huge success. She is an amazing artist.

whizzard blizzard I never liked the song girl crush it's about being lesbian like seriously who gives a shit people should be listening to stuff like this it actually has a meaning that isn't hey I'm lesbian or gay that's all it seems to be about now a days

@Nogdog945

It's all about the cookie cutter bullshit in the any multi million dollar industry. Either you conform to what the people who sit in chairs say... or you can take your ass somewhere else... but we fans may like it doesn't mean they'll play it on the radio... the companies have a specific image they want
