The Bells Of St. Mary's
Aaron Neville Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Ah, hear they are calling,
The young loves, the true loves,
That come from the sea.
And so my beloved,
When red leaves are falling,
The love bells shall ring out,
The love bells shall ring out,
For you and me.
The Bells of St. Mary,
Ah, hear they are calling,
The young loves, the true loves,
That come from the sea.
And so my beloved,
When red leaves are falling,
The love bells shall ring out,
The love bells shall ring out,
The love bells shall ring out,
For you and me.
"The Bells of St. Mary" is a song written by A. Emmett Adams and Douglas Furber in 1917. Aaron Neville's rendition of the song paints pictures of the purest form of love, specifically that of young and true love. The bells of St. Mary's are a symbol of hope, love, and longing. The lyrics suggest the bells are calling out for the young and true loves that come from the sea. The sea could metaphorically represent the depth of emotions, where young and true love spring from. The use of the bells is also symbolic, reflecting the church and its harmony, as well as the hope that comes with faith.
As the song progresses, it describes how the love bells shall ring out for the beloved when red leaves are falling, which indicates the passing of time, the change of seasons, and the struggles that come with life. Despite these changes, their love shall ring out, resonating over time. The chorus is repeated, emphasizing the significance of the bells of St. Mary's and how they serve as a symbol of hope and love.
In summary, Aaron Neville's version of "The Bells of St. Mary" portrays the bells as a symbol of hope and love, specifically for young and true love that springs from the sea. The use of bells represents the church and the harmony it brings, which serves as a foundation for a long-lasting relationship.
