The group was founded in London by Sir Neville Marriner, and gave its first concert in 1959. It initially performed at St. Martin's church as a small, conductorless string group, and played a key role in the revival of Baroque performances in England. It has since expanded to include winds, but is of flexible size, changing its make-up to suit its repertoire, which ranges from the Baroque to contemporary works.

As well as live performances and many recordings, the group has played on a number of film soundtracks, including that of Amadeus (1984) and the English Patient (1996).

The associated Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chorus was formed in 1975. It is regularly heard on European television singing the music which introduces coverage of the UEFA Champions League.

I fully agree with the view that this is the greatest performance of this piece ever recorded. It's as though Mariner sees into the very soul of Pachelbel and hears it exactly as the composer did. I first heard it in this version when I was 19, in the dorm room of a friend who wanted it played at her wedding. I found it heartbreakingly beautiful. Almost too transcendent to have a use outside itself. But 9 years later I walked down the aisle to it after all. Every time I hear it, it renews my hope for my marriage, Nearly 40 years ago.

First time I heard this was in 1980 in St. Martins-in-the-Fields. They played it as an encore, so it wasn't in the program. We were amazed and my parents sent me to the front to ask the orchestra the name of piece. Nowadays that would be a real stupid question, since it became so very popular. Anyway, always nice to hear the first version you remember.

This is the fist version I ever heard, and it is the best version I have ever heard. It got hold of me then and it still holds me to this day, 33 years later. It is, without a doubt the most beautiful and glorious piece of music I have ever heard.

It makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck. It makes me happy and it can make me cry. It is the piece of music that I have requested to be played when I say goodbye to this world and when my friends and family say goodbye to me. It is beautiful, simply beautiful.

I never want this piece to end when it plays.

This recording of Pachelbel's Canon in D is also MY favorite. I've heard it many years ago, and it's still unmatched. And I'm not a particularly ardent fan of Mariner, but this time he did a bang up job.

I bought an LP in 1974 with this on and I have to say, despite hearing countless other renditions, this one is the outstanding one for me.

I have to agree that this rendition is truly the best rendition for this Baroque Era piece. I have owned 14 different renditions from a lot of famous conductors around the world, but none seemed to capture this piece's era as well as Sir Neville Mariner's. I often read criticisms about how his renditions of any piece seem to lack power, but this particular rendition of Pachelbel's Canon shows that sometime it doesn't take power and majesty to capture the Baroque era spirit!

@vbbain The CD this recording is taken from is called 'The Classic Experience' and was released under the EMI Classical label in 1988. If you're attempting to buy the CD you should be aware that there are multiple follow ups to the CD called 'The Classic Experience II' and 'The Classic Experience III' so do be careful in selecting the correct CD. The track also appeared on 'The Very Best of The Classic Experience' which pooled tracks from all three outings.

My dad used to have the old album named “Super Classix classical music from the last 300 years” and this interpretation was one of the tracks. This was in the early 90s album, and it blew my mind and set the bar for me for other interpretations of the song. I don’t even like the original tempo of the song. This one is just PERFECT.

Oh my goodness Wonderful! I am certain this is the version they used to play over the PA in Highschool when it was time to get to class. It would always bring a smile to my face but you may be suprized as to why. While everyone else was leaving I would remain as would my girlfriend, we both had a spare class and just sit and listen. Hehe Good memories.

My 2 cents: this particular rendition was heard on the TV series "Cosmos" hosted by Dr. Carl Sagan, I've spent many hours of my childhood listening to this over and over again (I'd recognize it even with my ears covered :) ), and I still feel like floating in the air every time I hear it, it's simply perfect... I think your right,it sounds the same as on the soundtrack of the tv-series Cosmos. Although there are enough classical pieces of music that moves me i must say i'm not a classical music lover but this piece of music is so touching, it brings emotions, causes wet eyes and i know i'm not the only one it happens to.

Does anyone know of a copy of St. Martins of the Field -- Can-Can Symphony, also known as Orpheus of the Underworld. Heard it on my car radio, cannot find ANYWHERE. Wha' happened to it? The last peasants overture will send you to the sky. Lady would not raise the gate let me out of a parking lot till it finished! Other orchestras do not capture this.
