All Cats Are Grey
Air Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I never thought that I would find myself
In bed amongst the stones
The columns are all men
Begging to crush me
No shapes sail on the dark deep lakes
And no flags wave me home

In the caves
All cats are grey
In the caves
The textures coat my skin
In the death cell

A single note
Rings on and on and on

Overall Meaning

The opening lyrics to Air's song "All Cats Are Grey" may seem cryptic and mysterious at first glance, but a closer examination reveals a deep sense of unease and discomfort. The singer finds themselves in an uncomfortable and unfamiliar place, lying in bed among the stones while columns loom above them like threatening figures. The lack of movement and life is emphasized with the absence of shapes sailing on the dark lakes and flags to guide them home, adding to the feeling of isolation and disorientation.

As the lyrics progress, the mood shifts into one of resignation and acceptance. The singer finds themselves in a cave where all cats are grey; a metaphor for the homogenization and loss of individuality that can occur in oppressive or constricting situations. The textures coat their skin, perhaps a physical representation of how the surroundings are suffocating and overwhelming them. The final line, "In the death cell, a single note rings on and on and on," is haunting and ominous. It suggests that despite the singer's efforts to escape or find comfort, they are trapped and cannot break free.

Overall, "All Cats Are Grey" is a song that explores the themes of isolation, oppression, and resignation. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of a person struggling to find their way in a dark and suffocating world.
