Alceu Valenca was born in countryside Pernambuco, Northeast Brazil. He is considered the most successful artist in achieving an aesthetic balance between traditional northeastern Brazilian music and a broad range of electronic sounds and effects from pop music. One can find traces of maracatu, coco and "repentes de viola" (improvising fast-paced Brazilian folk music) in most of his songs. Alceu was able to utilize the electric guitar the electric bass, and lately even a synthesizer was added to his broad scope of musical instruments.
Because of that, Alceu was able to recreate Northeastern traditional music, like baiao, coco, toada, maracatu, frevo, caboclinhos, embolada and repentes: all sung with a sometimes rock sometimes alternative sounding music background. His music and his themes are intangible, universal and unlimited. However, his aesthetic basis is genuinely Brazilian Northeastern music.

Formando ondas pelo milharal
Teu pelo claro, boneca dourada
Meu pelo escuro, cavalo-de-pau
De puro éter assoprava o vento
Formando ondas pelo milharal
Teu pelo claro, boneca dourada
Cavalo doido por onde trafegas?
Depois que eu vim parar na capital
Me derrubaste como quem me nega
Cavalo doido, cavalo-de-pau
Cavalo doido, cavalo-de-pau
Cavalo doido, cavalo-de-pau
Cavalo doido em sonho me levas
Teu nome é tempo vento vendaval
Me derrubaste como quem me nega
Cavalo doido, cavalo de pau
Cavalo doido, cavalo-de-pau
Cavalo doido, cavalo-de-pau, hei
De puro éter assoprava o vento
Formando ondas pelo milharal
Teu pelo claro, boneca dourada
Meu pelo escuro, cavalo-de-pau
De puro éter assoprava o vento
Formando ondas pelo milharal
Teu pelo claro, boneca dourada
Meu pelo escuro, cavalo-de-pau
Cavalo doido por onde trafegas?
Depois que eu vim parar na capital
Me derrubaste como quem me nega
Cavalo doido, cavalo-de-pau
Cavalo doido, cavalo-de-pau
Cavalo doido, cavalo-de-pau
Cavalo doido em sonho me levas
Teu nome é tempo vento vendaval
Me derrubaste como quem me nega
Cavalo doido, cavalo de pau
Cavalo doido, cavalo-de-pau
Cavalo doido, cavalo-de-pau
Cavalo doido, cavalo-de-pau
Cavalo doido, cavalo-de-pau, he
The lyrics of Alceu Valença's song "Cavalo De Pau" are rich in symbolism and metaphor. The song is about a horse made of wood and a doll made of gold who are caught in a love affair. The song describes the horse as blowing "pure ether" in the wind, creating waves in the cornfield, while the doll has light-colored hair that shines like gold. The horse is dark and solid, like a piece of wood, while the doll is delicate and fragile, like a piece of gold.
The lyrics suggest that the horse is wild and unpredictable, and the singer feels like he has been knocked down and rejected by the horse. The horse and the doll seem to be on different paths, with the horse representing freedom and wildness and the doll representing a more structured, static life. The singer seems to be caught in between these two forces, unable to fully embrace either one.
The song is a commentary on the paradoxical nature of life, where we must balance freedom and control, wildness and structure. The horse represents the primal, untamed desires of the human spirit, while the doll represents the constraints of society that attempt to restrain our natural impulses.

Correr pelo milharal com os cabelos esvoaçando ao vento, montado num cavalo imaginário é privilégio de todo menino da zona rural. Transformar essas lembranças em poesia, é para poucos.
