Asfur
Amal Murkus Lyrics

Marcel Khalife's Levantine tragediyya "Asphur\Sparrow On My Sill" as covered by Galilean thrush Amal Murkus on her 1998 debut album:

A sparrow landed on my window sill
"Hide me..Hide me please!"
I asked "Where did you come from?"
It said "From the limits of the sky"
"What brought you here?"
"I escaped from a neighboring house"
"What frightened you so?"

"The cage I was put in"
"Why are you feathers gone?"
"The hand of time plucked them out"

Its wings broken and tears in its frightened eyes
"I want to fly away, up to the sky again. Yet I can't anymore"
I held it close and felt its anguished pain
By escaping its cage it had broken its wings

Then I told it:
"Don't be afraid. Look the sun is rising"

And through the woods came surging
the incandescent waves of freedom
like an unshackled bird
taking off for the sky
