Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Amaryoni's song "Lion Sleeps No More" speak about the anger of lions who have decided that they will no longer sleep in the jungle or savannah anymore. The repetitive use of the phrase "No more jungle, no more savannah" indicates a strong decision by the lions to change their ways. The opening lines of the song "Mbube ha, Uyimbube" can be interpreted as a call to action to the lions to take charge and assert their power.

The phrase "Hi uyimbube" is repeated throughout the song, which translates to "here is the lion". This is also an assertion of the lions' power and presence. The latter part of the song where the phrase "hey uyimbube mama" is repeated can be seen as a call to the lionesses to join in and support the decision made by the lions. The song ends with the phrase "Mbube ha, uyimbube" which further reinforces the strength and power of the lions.

Wonderful rendition of an enchanting song originally written and performed by Solomon Linda with the Evening Birds in 1939!

OUTSTANTING, Africans have always carried an amazing gift of acapella as it was their only instrument they had no guitars, pianos, organs, harps, harmonicas, string bass an so forth. They demonstrated their pain to the world when they were kidnapped from their own homeland and sold into slavery, their acapella chanting will ring in our ears forever, a horriable barberic injustice. They were and still are today brilliant musicians. God Bless Them and Woe unto those who have violated their rights.

I have searched for years for a recording like this done by the Billy Williams Quartet in 1951/52 as semi-regulars on the Sid Caesar Comedy Hour or Your Show of Shows.  It was such a hit the group was asked to repeat the performance several times.Anyone have a clue to where I can find a recording. This version is close and nicely done while the Williams  version is just a tad faster with a bit more expression ! BTW, the Williams group introduced their hit Shanghai on this show about the same time...   Thank You !
