Well look at you.
Is that a new boy stuck on your shoe?
Come on Annie, How is it so?
You've always got a new bubble to blow.
I'm gonna tell you how it's gonna get done.
I'm just a girl, that's only chewing for fun.
Wrap him round your finger like you're playing with gum.
[Chorus]
Oh no, oh no!
You've got it all wrong.
How can you
Think you're chocolate
When you're chewing gum?
Oh no, oh no!
A slip of the tongue
How can you
Think you're chocolate
When you're chewing gum?
Oh no.
Was there anything else?
Hey Annie, you used to be,
The only girl to take it seriously.
Come on Annie, tell us your trick.
On how you keep on getting boys to stick?
Okay, I'll tell you but you'll never look back
It's my selection; it's my pick of the pack.
Well, hot dog I'm a chewing machine.
It makes me smile, and it keeps my teeth clean.
[Chorus]
Oh no, oh no!
You've got it all wrong.
How can you
Think you're chocolate
When you're chewing gum?
Oh no, oh no!
A slip of the tongue
How can you
Think you're chocolate
When you're chewing gum?
Oh no, oh no!
You've got it all wrong.
How can you
Think you're chocolate
When you're chewing gum?
Oh no, oh no!
No you're not the one.
How can you
Think you're chocolate
When you're chewing gum?
Oh No!
I don't want to settle down, I just want to have fun.
I don't want to settle down, I just want to chew gum.
I don't want to settle down, I just want to have fun.
I don't want to settle down, I just want to chew gum.
[Chorus]
Oh no, oh no!
You've got it all wrong.
How can you
Think you're chocolate
When you're chewing gum?
Oh no, oh no!
A slip of the tongue
How can you
Think you're chocolate
When you're chewing gum?
Oh no, oh no!
You've got it all wrong.
How can you
Think you're chocolate
When you're chewing gum?
Oh no, oh no!
No you're not the one.
How can you
Think you're chocolate
When you're chewing gum?
Oh no!
Oh no!
The song "Chewing Gum" by Annie is all about her feeling superior to another girl who is merely a "bubblegum girl" who chews gum and magnetizes boys towards her. Annie feels that this girl does not deserve the attention she receives because, unlike her bubbly personality, chewing gum is only something one does for mere entertainment. The chorus reminds listeners that the girl's behavior is inappropriate as she is comparing herself to chocolate, which is something classy and chic, unlike the casualness of chewing gum.
Annie's lyrics seem to mock the society standards that encourage girls to behave in a particular way to attract boys. By suggesting, she is more than just a bubblegum girl, Annie is keen to establish a strong sense of individuality and identity. She refuses to be seen as a mere object of desire and admiration, rather; she wants people to appreciate her for who she is, not as a chewing gum.
