Masks
Aviators Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Creeping eyes from across this masquerade
Feeling scared
Every stare will cut like blades
Dead inside, try to hide behind
And shake the tremors

Hiding with a smile in a crowded place
Moaning through the lips of a plastic face
Every word just a code that screams
Owned by terror
Are you scared to see what lies beneath
Behind these artificial teeth
Through the guilty strings this mask
Controls it's wearer

Trapped in our own disguises
Cut free but soulless still
Our dreams are haunted by the ghosts we kill
Identities of silence
In search of cheaper scares
We're all surrounded by the masks we wear

Vilified for deeds done in the light
Hiding away within plain sight
These cloaks are keeping safe
The secret faces
Terrified of making one mistake
Narrow mind 'til the soul begins to break
We are just husks seeking
The world's false graces

Trapped in our own disguises
Cut free but soulless still
Our dreams are haunted by the ghosts we kill
Identities of silence
In search of cheaper scares
We're all surrounded by the masks we wear

Awake within the moment
Asleep throughout our lives
We suffer in this torment
Ensnared in our own lies
In facelessness we're equal
When we're not even there
You're someone underneath this
Behind the mask you wear

Trapped in our own disguises
Cut free but soulless still
Our dreams are haunted by the ghosts we kill
Identities of silence
In search of cheaper scares
We're all surrounded by the masks we wear

Trapped in our own disguises
Cut free but soulless still
Our dreams are haunted by the ghosts we kill
Identities of silence

In search of cheaper scares
We're all surrounded by the masks we wear

Overall Meaning

In "Masks" by Aviators, the lyrics delve into the concept of wearing masks and hiding one's true self in order to fit in or protect oneself. The song begins with the idea of feeling scared and vulnerable in a social setting, where every stare feels like a blade that cuts deep. The singer describes themselves as dead inside, trying to hide behind a mask and suppress their trembling emotions. It's a portrayal of the struggle to maintain a facade of happiness and normalcy even when feeling empty inside.

The lyrics continue to explore the various masks we wear in different situations. There's a mention of a crowded place where the singer moans through a plastic face, implying a sense of suffocation and inauthenticity. The words spoken are described as codes that scream, representing the fear and terror that lie beneath the surface. The mask becomes a controlling force, manipulating the wearer and keeping them from revealing their true selves.

The song emphasizes that everyone is trapped in their own disguises, despite being cut free from societal expectations. The dreams of individuals are haunted by the ghosts they have killed, referring to the parts of themselves that they have sacrificed to conform or protect themselves. The masks are seen as identities of silence, seeking cheaper scares and false gratification. Ultimately, the lyrics suggest that we are all surrounded by the masks we wear, inhibiting us from truly connecting with others and ourselves.

Ooooh big words! I’m going to use my basic understanding of scientific etymology to try to understand!
First of the chopping block,
“sociology”
Socio sounds like social, which if I understand correctly, means how humans interacts with other humans.
Ology is simply the study of the root word in front of it,
So sociology is the study of humans interacting with other humans.
And next is “dramaturgy”
Drama is like the performative arts, or it sounds like something else from context, maybe like a child being dramatic, so does drama refer to behavior? I think so.
Turgy is a suffix I only recognize due to SCP stuff, but from what I can tell from thaumuturgic I think it refers to an art form? I will immediately look up turgy’s meaning and edit this comment.

And I am back, and urgy means “to work with”
So dramaturgy means to work with drama, or from rewatching the vid and rereading the comment, trama, I hope that I am a help to those here

Perhaps it's because sociology is one of my majors, but the first thing that popped into my head when listening to this song was Dramaturgy and impression management. Intentional or not, song lyrics has themes of Goffmanian dramaturgy, which makes me like it more if anything.

Hahaha yes! Other sociological nerds in the chat, I love it 💖

We all love the music, and the potent lyrics for sure.. But I'd just like to take a moment to appreciate the art. As listening, I found myself looking, really LOOKING, and I just kept noticing all these wonderful little details, each one adding to whatever story is being told.. The split arm, the scattered masks... The way the strings hoisting the puppet mirror the puppets sprawling shadow.. And so many more tiny things that tell a story...

@Archermon aren't there three dead puppets? There's one on the left slumped over, one on the right laying down, and a third in the hallway of which we can only see the mask and hand.

Archermon

Like the 2nd puppet collapsed in the shadow

@Forsaken Pumpkin Mhmmh! It really is nice, and one of the reasons I enjoy all their original works, as they still always feel like they carry at LEAST as much meaning and weight as their old fan works, and so much more than so many other songs that don't try to incorporate more complicated characters and stories.
