… Read Full Bio ↴Bacilos was a latin music group based in Miami, Florida, United States.
The band was formed in 1995 by three students of the University of Miami and was named after the Spanish word for bacillus. Originally a quartet, the band drew influences from Cuban folk singer Silvio Rodríguez and Argentinian rock singer Fito Páez. The band eventually became a trio consisting of Colombian singer and guitarist Jorge Villamizar, bassist André Lopes and percussionist José Javier Freire before releasing an independent album Madera in 1999.
Bacilos signed with Warner Music in 2000. The selftitled album Bacilos was actually a re-edition of Madera and was nominated for two Latin Grammy awards and went gold in Colombia. The single Tabaco Y Chanel was widely played on Latin radio stations and the success of their major label debut earned them a slot as support artist on a world tour by Spanish artist Alejandro Sanz.
In 2002 Caraluna added to their reputation winning a Grammy for best Latin pop album and making the Billboard Latin album charts. The album also won best album at the Latin Grammies and their song Mi Primer Millón a humorous account of trying to make it in the music industry, again went top 10 in Chile and made the Billboard and world Latin music charts in 2003a humorous account of trying to make it in the music industry, again went top 10 in Chile and made the Billboard and world Latin music charts in 2003 and won best tropical song. yo a alcancé a probar ese sabor,
yo alcancé a robarme una etiqueta,
de una camiseta de Lacoste.
Yo alcancé a mirar esos tacones,
cuando no eran moda retro-cool,
yo alcanze a sentir esos temores,
Coro:
Como quiesera volver a escuchar,
a mi mama medio hippie cantar,
como quiesiera ver a mi papa,
con sus tremendas patillas fumar,
en lso 70's, en los 70's.
Yo alcancé a estrenar los comerciales,
los primeros hechos en color,
la ciudad era tan moderna,
todo era moderno para mi.
Yo alcancé a soñar con ser Travolta,
pa besar a Olivia Newton John,
yo alcancé a ver a don Chespirito,
joven con su chipote chillon.
Coro
Bacilos' song "En Los 70's" is an ode to nostalgia and a celebration of the singer's memories of growing up in the 1970s. The lyrics describe the singer's experiences in that era, from stealing a Lacoste label from a shirt to longing to hear their half-Hippie mother sing to wishing they could see their father with his long sideburns smoking. The chorus emphasizes how much the singer wants to go back to that time and experience it all over again. The verses go on to describe a host of other experiences, such as watching Don Chespirito when he was young, dreaming of being John Travolta and kissing Olivia Newton-John, and seeing disco balls in discos, despite being too young to go out at night.
By including specific details about what they experienced and saw, Bacilos' song captures the unique cultural experience of growing up in the 1970s. The song's use of first-person perspective and vivid imagery helps the listener imagine the singer's life, whether they lived through the era themselves or not. The chorus, which repeats several times throughout the song, reflects the singer's deep attachment to that time, as they lament not being able to go back and relive it.
