On The Road Again
Bernard Lavilliers Lyrics

Bandits joyeux, insolents et drôles
On attendait que la mort nous frôle
On the road again, again
On the road again, again
On the road again, again
On the road again, again
(On the road again, again, oh)
(On the road again, again, oh)
On the road again, again
On the road again, again
(Again, on the road, again)
On the road again, again
On the road again, again
Ami, sais-tu que les mots d'amour
Voyagent mal de nos jours?
Tu partira encore plus lourd
On the road again, again
On the road again, again
On the road again, again (oh)
On the road again, again (oh)
On the road again
The lyrics of Bernard Lavilliers's song "On The Road Again" tells a story of a group of young, carefree individuals who are traveling through the English countryside. The opening line describes the group in their youth, full of vigor and confidence, and the following lines indicate a recklessness and even a sense of invincibility with their joyous and insolent attitudes as they embrace whatever comes their way. They are waiting for death to come and "touch" them, almost as if they don't fear it but rather expect it.
As they continue their journey, they leave Ireland and the land behind them illuminates. They are on the road again and their journey seems never-ending. The reference to them getting hanged someday indicates they are outlaws, living life on the edge and not afraid to face the consequences. Nevertheless, their journey continues as they leave the countryside and come upon the ocean that always returns to the shore. This can be interpreted as a metaphor for their journey—no matter where they go in life, they will always end up back where they started, and nothing is permanent. The final verse indicates that death finally caught up with them, and the words of love that they spoke or shared are lost.

Mille fois bravo!
