Worse Comes To Worst
Billy Joel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Today I'm livin' like a rich man's son
Tomorrow mornin' I could be a bum
It doesn't matter which direction, though
I know a woman in New Mexico
Chorus:
Worse comes to worst
I'll get along
I don't know how, but sometimes
I can be strong
Oh, and if I don't have a car, I'll hitch
I got a thumb and she's a son of a bitch
I do my writing on my road guitar
And make a living at a piano bar, oh
Chorus
Lightning and thunder
Flashed across the roads we drove upon
Oh, but it's clear skies we're under
When I am together, when I sing the song
Chorus
Oh, fun ain't easy if it ain't free
Too many people got a hold on me
But I know something that they don't know

I know a woman in New Mexico
Chorus 3x and fade

Overall Meaning

In Billy Joel's song "Worse Comes To Worst," the lyrics describe the singer's perspective on life and how he copes with the uncertainties of his future. The opening line "Today I'm livin' like a rich man's son, tomorrow mornin' I could be a bum" suggests that the singer is aware of the fleeting nature of success and how quickly fortunes can change. He acknowledges the possibility that his life might take a turn for the worse, but he isn't deterred by this because he has the confidence to survive whatever comes his way.

The chorus, "Worse comes to worst, I'll get along, I don't know how, but sometimes I can be strong" illustrates the singer's resilient attitude towards life. He knows that he might face difficult situations, but he believes in his ability to persevere through them. He also mentions that he has a woman in New Mexico who is a source of comfort for him.

The singer then goes on to describe how he makes a living as a musician, playing his guitar on the road and performing at a piano bar. The lyrics "I do my writing on my road guitar, and make a living at a piano bar" highlights the singer's artistic aspirations and his willingness to pursue them in unconventional ways.

Overall, "Worse Comes To Worst" is a song about survival, resilience, and finding joy and meaning in life, even when the odds are against you.

Today I’m livin’ like a rich man’s son
Tomorrow mornin’ I could be a bum
It doesn’t matter which direction though
I know a woman in New Mexico
Oh worse comes to worst, I’ll get along
I don’t know how but sometimes I can be strong

And if I don’t have a car I’ll hitch
I got a thumb and she’s a son of a bitch
I’ll do my writing on my road guitar
And make a living at a piano bar
Oh worse comes to worst, I’ll get along
I don’t know how but sometimes I can be strong

Ooh lightning and thunder
Flashed across the roads we drove upon
Oh but it’s clear skies we’re under
When I am together, when I sing this song

Worse comes to worst, I’ll get along
I don’t know how but sometimes I can be strong

Fun ain’t easy if it ain’t free
Too many people got a hold on me
But I know something that they don’t know
I know a woman in New Mexico
Oh worse comes to worst, I’ll get along
I don’t know how but sometimes I can be strong

Worse comes to worst, I’ll get along
I don’t know how but sometimes I can be strong

The views on this song shows just how under appreciated Billy’s songs really are 😔

My childhood song

Not to me I haven't heard a billy Joel song that I did not like. No clunkers

@markw4206

Actually it shows how under the radar THIS album has been. Joel's other songs on YT get millions of likes. It's ironic because IMO this was his very best.

@harrybaran2683

@Mark W Absolutely correct!!

@snoopstp4189

yea this is only the best song he ever wrote

@chemicalfalcon9604

In the Top 5 of all Billy Joel songs. This one always gets me moving when I need some energy.

@SyncopateTheShot

Billy's voice changes with the last two choruses of the song (it happens at 2:41, shifting more dramatically at 2:55) showing us that "worse has come to worst", at least in the song for the character Billy is singing about. Ingenius.

@Wehiremonkeys

I didn't think much of it before but his voice does change.

@nhstuff6658

I've heard this tune since its first publication. Not hearing any changes, though recording "dubs" were a bit different in the analog days when this was recorded. Calling it out seems.....meh
