Sweetest smile
Black Lyrics

'Cause everyone said it would be broken some day,
And now I've come to that fateful day,
So I sit on the floor with my head in my hands,
And don't tell me how to make it pay,
I write a new song every day,
I just wish I was made of wood,
[Chorus]
Even if I should,
If I should
The sweetest smile that ever did.
Melt the pats in the butter dish.
And if you could have believed in me.
I swear to God I'd have made damn sure.
Our hearts were warm,
And glad with wine.
I'd keep the doors locked all the time.
I just wish I was made of wood.
You might not seem glad.
Even if you should.
[Chorus]
Even if you should
If you should
If you should
If you should
I think my heart must be made of clay.
'Cause everyone said it would be broken someday.
Seems like I have come to that fateful day.
So I sit on the floor with my head in my hands
With my head in my hands
With my head in my hands
The lyrics to Black’s song “Sweetest Smile” are a melancholic reflection on heartbreak and the pain it causes. The first verse alludes to the inevitability of heartbreak, with the singer acknowledging that their heart must be made of clay because everyone told them it would eventually break. The second verse reveals the singer’s coping mechanism – writing music, a new song every day, to deal with the pain. However, they express a sense of envy towards objects like wood, which would not feel pain even if they should, highlighting the intensity of their emotional distress.
The chorus is a plea for the person who once gave the “sweetest smile” – someone who held the singer’s heart – to have believed in them. The imagery of melting butter is a metaphor for the incredible effect that person once had on them. The promise of warmth and happiness becomes more poignant in the final lines of the chorus when the singer suggests that they would keep the doors locked all the time to protect that happiness.
The song ends with a repetition of the first verse, which creates a cyclical sense of despair and reinforces the idea that heartbreak is inevitable. The phrase “with my head in my hands” represents the singer’s defeat and sense of powerlessness.
Overall, “Sweetest Smile” is a bittersweet song that captures the pain and fragility of heartbreak. It also highlights the cathartic power of music to help people deal with their emotions.
