Produced by Chicago rancor-rock godfather Steve Albini, "Grafted to an Elbow" is oblique yet vehement, its unease with contemporary society conveyed more by TV- damaged titles like "Nature's Gentle Regulator" than by the cryptic, fragmentary lyrics spit out by David Bryant (Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Set Fires To Flames).

Bliss Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And contemplate the sky
The moonshine
Reflecting in your eyes
Ooh, this is all that i ask for
That these simple pleasures are lastin' forever
Turn out the light, turn out the light...
And let's crystallize in time
Sing a song - it's just your soul laughing
Sing a song - it's just your soul crying (can you hear it)
Let this midnight never be gone
No more searchlights, travelling on
Holding you tight, tight in my armour
Under my wings, love, you'll never be warmer
Ah, then the cruel morning comes
All my dreams are gone
Sing a song - it's just your soul laughing, sing it
Sing a song - it's just your soul crying
So cruel is the day
The sunshine showing up the cracks in my life
Lighting up the hole in my heart
Hey yeah, please, turn out the light
Turn out the light...
The lyrics of Bliss's song Light and Shade are filled with imagery and emotion as they express the desire for simple pleasures and the pain of life's hardships. The opening lines describe a peaceful and intimate moment between two people, with the singer marveling at the beauty of the moon reflected in their partner's eyes. They long for this moment to last forever, to be crystallized in time.
The chorus introduces the idea of singing as a way to express both joy and sorrow, with the soul itself being the source of these emotions. The singer urges the listener to embrace their emotions and let them out through music, whether it's laughter or tears. The second verse contrasts the blissful night with the harshness of day, with the singer expressing the pain and emptiness they feel when faced with the realities of their life. They long for the darkness and the comfort it brings, urging for the light to be turned off.
Overall, Light and Shade is a tender and poetic expression of human desire and vulnerability, capturing the deep emotions and inner turmoil that everyone experiences at some point in their life.
