Already Gone
Blue Rodeo Lyrics

Another night just staring at the wall.
Last night's conversation knocked me off my feet
Guess today I'll fall
I wish that we could find the words to look the other way
Be careful of the things we do and watch the things we say
And maybe then we'd get somewhere we'd never been before
But what's the use in fighting when you know you've lost the war.
Walk the streets in New Orleans, shirt soaked to my skin
Through the mess of yesterday's parade.
Thousand times a day I think of calling you again
Come to my senses instead.
And every time we walk away we lose a little time
Pretending to each other now that everything is fine.
I know whatever lies I use to get myself to sleep
I wake up to the promises I know we couldn't keep.
Say you don't see what's wrong
Every night lasting oh so long,
And I know, I do, you're already gone.
I wonder should I get up, would but what's the point?
Oh once something's gone it's gone for good.
Maybe I could look away back to where we used to be,
One more time I wish I could.
Oh, never mind the reasons that tore us all apart
We've both done things I know we can't defend.
What's the use in tracing it all back to the start
There's something missing in the end.
I wish that we could find the words to look the other way
Be careful of the things we do and everything we say
And maybe then we'd get somewhere we'd never been before
But what's the use in fighting when you know you've lost the war.
Say you don't see what's wrong
Every night lasting oh so long,
And I know, I do, you're already gone.
Oh I know, I do, you're already gone.
The lyrics to Blue Rodeo's Already Gone paint a picture of a relationship on the verge of collapse. The singer wakes up on a Monday morning feeling numb and unable to speak. He's been staring at the wall all night, unable to come up with the right words to fix the problems in his relationship. The conversation from the night before knocked him off his feet, and he knows that he is going to fall again today. The singer wishes that the couple could find the right words to look the other way, to be careful with the things they say and do. But ultimately, it's too late - they've lost the war and the other person is already gone.
The second verse finds the singer walking through the streets of New Orleans with his shirt soaked through. He's thinking about calling the other person, but he knows that he needs to come to his senses instead. Every time they walk away from each other, they lose a little more time pretending that everything is fine. The singer admits that he lies to himself to get to sleep but wakes up to the reality that they couldn't keep their promises.
In the final verse, the singer wonders if there's any point in getting up, and he wishes that he could look away back to where things used to be. He admits that they've both done things that they can't defend and that there's something missing in the end. Again, he wishes that they could find the right words to make things better, but he knows that they've lost the war.
Overall, the lyrics to Already Gone paint a bleak picture of a relationship in trouble. Both people are struggling to find the right words, and the singer realizes that it might be too late to salvage the situation.

Already Gone - Blue Rodeo
Monday morning waking up
Still too numb to speak
Another night staring at the wall
Last night's conversation
Knocked me off my feet
I guess today I fall
I wish that we could find the words
To look the other way
Be careful of the things we do
And watch the things we say
Maybe then we'd get somewhere
We've never been before
Ah, but what's the use in fighting
When you know you've lost the war
Walked the streets of New Orleans
Shirt soaked to my skin
Through the mess of yesterday's parade
A thousand times a day
I think of calling you again
But I come to my senses instead
And every time we walk away
We lose a little time
Pretending to each other now
That everything is fine
I know whatever lies I use
To get myself to sleep
I’ll wake up to the promises
I know we couldn’t keep
Say you don't see
What's wrong
Every night
Lasting oh-so long
I know I do
You're already gone
I wonder should I get up
I would but what's the point
Oh when something's gone
It's gone for good
Maybe I could look away
Back to where we used to be
One more time
I wish I could
Oh never mind the reasons
That tore us all apart
We've both done things
I know we can't defend
What's the use in tracing
It all back to the start
There’s something missing in the end
I wish that we could find
The words to look the other way
Be careful of the things we do
And everything we say
And maybe then we'd get somewhere
We've never been before
Ah but what's the use in fighting
When you know you've lost the war
Say you don't see
What's wrong
Every night
Lasting oh-so long
I know I do
You're already gone
Oh I know, I know
You're already gone
