Blue Rodeo Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You could barely hide the satisfaction on your face
Time takes another day
Changes you in subtle ways
Lifts you up, then slowly lets you go
Sitting there across the room your smile looks like a threat
Living underneath the heel of what you might do next
Cuts you down then makes you pay
One day you'll be walking fine
The next day lightning hits you from behind
[Chorus]
One heart
One love
Two people can rise above
Each time we fall
Don't know what I was thinking of and
Don't say it's so
Don't say it's so
Let me be the last to know
Seems we move backwards now the further on we walk
It's hard to find a single line through all our double talk
Home late and drunk again
Close the door; shut out the rain
One more day, no damage done
My spirit's falling, sinking like the sun
[Chorus]
Standing at your doorway I can hear your voice inside
Telling all your friends what you're gonna say to me tonight
Oh write me a better part
Find the words to break your heart
Keep you on your knees forever
Funny now my tongue gets tied together
[Chorus]
The lyrics to Blue Rodeo's song Last To Know tell a story of a troubled relationship that is heading towards its end. The song speaks to the fleeting nature of love and the inevitability of change that comes with time. The first verse paints a picture of a relationship that was built over a long period of time, but slipped away in an instant. The satisfaction on the face of the other person is a clear indication that the end was desired. Time is also depicted as a force that changes people slowly, but surely, and eventually lets them go. The second verse talks about the fear that creeps in after a relationship ends. The memories that once made you happy now cut you down and make you pay for your mistakes, and you're left wondering what you were thinking about.
The chorus of the song speaks about the two people who once shared love. They can still rise above their problems every time they fall, but the singer of the song pleads to be the last one to know if it's over between them. The final verse shows that despite the distance between them, there is still a chance to start anew. The singer stands at his partner's door, hearing her voice inside as she talks to her friends about what she will say to him that night. He wishes he could find the right words to make things better, but his tongue gets tied in knots. The song ends with the chorus, emphasizing the need for one more chance to make things work.
