The members of The Band first worked together as The Hawks, the backing band of rockabilly singer Ronnie Hawkins from 1959 until 1963. Shortly afterwards, Bob Dylan came to Toronto and recruited the quintet for his history-making 1965/1966 world tour. The Band also worked with Dylan on the initial Blonde on Blonde sessions which, bar two tracks, were ultimately abandoned in favour of versions recorded with Nashville session musicians.
After a motorcycle accident in mid-1966, Dylan retreated from the public eye to his country house near Woodstock, New York. He was joined by the Band for some informal jam sessions starting in the autumn of 1967, nearly all of which were recorded. After being heavily bootleged, Columbia Records finally released The Basement Tapes in 1975, a selection of the better tracks recorded during the sessions along with new recordings by The Band.
Bob Dylan and The Band were reunited in 1974, recording Planet Waves for Asylum Records, Dylan's first album recorded for a record label other than Columbia. Although the album was released under Dylan's name alone, The Band joined Dylan for his first tour in eight years in support of Planet Waves, with some of the material recorded and released on the 1975 concert record Before the Flood.
Columbia Records finally released The Bootleg Series Vol. 11: The Basement Tapes Complete in November 2014, featuring every surving recording from the original sessions in Woodstock.

V1
Try to get it right now,
Baby give a try
Searching for a reason,
To chase a rising star
If you cannot see it,
If you cannot feel it too
Feel another breeze
So turn another page now,
Turn your fate around
Get back in the game Oh,
People look out
R.
Looking at the left, looking at the site
Reminiscing about the lowest times
Try to pick it up , try to figure out
Don't wanna be a burning star
Looking at the right, looking at the site
Just take the essential from the life
Try to pick it up, try to figure out
Don't wanna be a burning star
V2
Just another day is gone
Figure out what's right or wrong
Flash into your soul
Babe you've got it all
Now you gonna see it,
Now you gonna feel it too
Open up your eyes,
And you'll realize
You turned another page now,
Turned your fate around
Got back in the game oh
People look out
R.
Looking at the left, looking at the site
Reminiscing about the lowest times
Try to pick it up , try to figure out
Don't wanna be a burning star
Looking at the right , looking at the site
Just take the essential from the life
Try to pick it up, try to figure out
Don't wanna be a burning star
The lyrics to Bob Dylan and The Band's Song For Canada express the idea of searching for direction and purpose in life. The opening lines, "Try to get it right now, Baby give a try. Searching for a reason, To chase a rising star" demonstrate the struggle to find meaning in life and the desire to follow one's dreams. The song acknowledges that this journey can be difficult and sometimes it may seem like one is lost in the dark, but the chorus reminds us to keep striving for success and not burn out too quickly, "Try to pick it up, try to figure out. Don't wanna be a burning star."
The second verse of the song continues with the theme of taking charge of one's life and finding one's inner strength, "Just another day is gone. Figure out what's right or wrong. Flash into your soul. Babe you've got it all." The lyrics suggest that through self-reflection and introspection, one can discover their inner power and learn to navigate life with purpose and confidence.
Overall, Bob Dylan and The Band's Song For Canada speaks to the struggles and rewards of finding direction in life. Through its poetic and introspective lyrics, the song encourages listeners to embrace the challenges of life and continue to pursue their dreams and goals.
