However, he is widely respected for being a multi-talented, versatile performer.

Darin was a very special and talented entertainer. He was a Grammy award winning singer ('Mack The Knife'), a respected member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ('Dream Lover', 'Splish Splash', 'If I Were A Carpenter') a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, a successful record producer, an Oscar nominated actor and a strong supporter of the American Heart Association. Bobby was married to actress Sandra Dee from 1960-1967. They had one son, Dodd, born in December 1961. As a result of complications from a rheumatic heart, Bobby's life was tragically cut short in 1973.

Darin's mother, Vanina Cassotto, had given birth to him when she was 16, and as a result, her parents raised Darin as though he were their son while Vanina was presented off as his elder sister. Darin did not learn the truth about his parentage until he was 32.

Bobby Darin is the best singer as far as I am concerned. This man can sing rings around even the so called best of them. Just listen to the amazing tones of Bobby's voice as it hits you right between the ears. You have to be deaf not to hear the total richness of Bobby's ballad version, it's the best ever.

His version of after you've gone is actually pretty uptempo and dramatic. It's not really a tender ballad. Go listen to "the other half of me". It's an amazing Bobby Darin ballad. I think this song is an amazing ballad too. Can't image anyone singing it better. Or go listen to his version of 'my buddy'. There's probably more good slow songs by him.

I enjoy Darin's ballads quite a lot, actually. I love the Django version of this song to death, but that version's only instrumental. I've recently been looking for a good vocal cover of this song, and I've got to say, Bobby Darin's is one of the best. I'm going to listen to a few more of his ballads so I can get a good feel for them, but you've at least got someone on your side as far as this song goes.

I first heard Judy Garland sing it in a concert in London (at the Palladium, I think)..She recorded an album of in the early 60s that I had..She dedicated the song to her daughter Liza in the audience..Liza was probably 16 at the time.

I don't get how you guys can consider Darin's ballad work as somehow not up to the standards of his uptempo stuff. If you ever get a chance to hear him sing "Who's Afraid Of Virginia Wolf?", you'll see what I'm talking about. Or when he sings "When I Look In Your Eyes". Darin was as good as anyone who ever did it in those performances. However, I recognize that this stuff is purely subjective so my opinion is just that...my opinion. But still.....

Willie you are 100% on the money. He was a great singer whether doing swing or a ballad, especially his version of Once Upon a Time.

Actually I gotta agree with your friend. For some reason I've never really been able to resonate with Darin's ballads the way I do with his uptempo numbers. Not that they're sub-par performances, but something about them is just not quite "there" for me. Probably the only Darin ballad I could say I "like" is "After You've Gone", but that's relative to all his ballads, not his repertoire in general.

Well, I certainly have to disagree with you as far as Sinatra is concerned. I believe that Booby was an excellent singer and he had a commanding stage presence. But, in my opinion, there was never a singer with the ability to get inside a song and make it his own like Sinatra. He was truly the most important singer to emerge from the 20th century.

Darin had a higher vocal range than Sinatra and was never out of tune, which happened to Sinatra live; he kept his notes long like no other despite having a devastated heart, as only God knows.. Moreover Darin had already outclassed Sinatra's attendance at the Copa, with the greatest artists of the time lining up to hear him. Darin was a composer, singer, songwriter, comedian and dramatic actor, dancer, entertainer, imitator and played five instruments, gifted with a high IQ he was in fact a member of the Mensa ... Sinatra was not worthy even to polish his shoes.
