The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot
Brand New Lyrics

If it makes you less sad
I will die by your hand
Hope you find out what you want
Already know what I am

And if it makes you less sad
We'll start talking again
You can tell me how vile I already know that I am
I'll grow old, start acting my age
Be a brand new day in a life that you hate

A crown of gold
A heart that's harder than stone
And it hurts a whole lot
But it's missed when it's gone

Call me a safe bet
I'm bettin' I'm not
I'm glad that you can forgive
Only hoping as time goes, you can forget

If it makes you less sad
I'll move out of the state
You can keep to yourself
I'll keep out of your way

And if it makes you less sad
I'll take your pictures all down
Every picture you paint
I will paint myself out
It's cold as a tomb
And it's dark in your room
When I sneak to your bed
To pour salt in your wounds
So call it quits or get a grip
Say you wanted a solution
You just wanted to be missed

Call me a safe bet
I'm betting I'm not
I'm glad that you can forgive
Only hoping as time goes, you can forget
So you can forget
You can forget

You are calm and reposed
Let your beauty unfold
Pale white, like the skin stretched over your bones
Spring keeps you ever close
You are second hand smoke
You are so fragile and thin
Standing trial for your sins
Holding onto yourself the best you can
You are the smell before rain
You are the blood in my veins

Call me a safe bet
I'm bettin' I'm not
I'm glad that you can forgive
Only hoping as time goes, you can forget

@Jesse Gotta love the internet because my experience is slightly similar. I was super into this type of music in high school (06-10) but somehow Brand New slipped under my radar and I sort of gravitated towards the more hardcore scene but when i was 19 and finished high school i dated a girl froma different school i met through a good friend of mine (also a girl). i remember plain as day when my friend said "omg you've never heard of brand new?!" this was the first song she showed me

fast forward about half a year, girl my friend introduced me to was going off to a 4 year university, i was through my first year of community college and had already lost faith in knowing what i really wanted to do with my life. she let me know that she wanted to go to college completely free of any chains, and i was caught up in the ones i'd created for myself.

i still remember i was between jobs and barely going to my classes, and my dad felt for me and offered to pay me to repaint his office building (it didn't need to be painted, but my dad's a good guy) and I'll never forget feeling heartbroken and lost in life and listening to this song, then deciding to listen to the whole album.. the whole album feels like it has the same theme of this song. people like to say that music that falls under the "emo" umbrella was depressing, but i found it so cathartic. like you could work through the most primal basic feelings of isolation, disillusionment, fear, pain, sacrificial love, selflessness and understanding with a song that represented how you felt inside

I'll grow old
And start acting my age
I'll be a brand new day
In a life that you hate

You want to have all the answers and be the shoulder to lean on, but in the end you sacrifice the free unhinged part of yourself that drew her to you in the first place, and all of a sudden you become the object to be chained to in your effort to provide stability

You see, Petrichor is the official name for the smell before rain, or the smell of rain.

And this word is made up of Petra ( stone) and Ichor, which is a kinda the blood of gods..so it flows in their veins.

Which is in the next line of the song sorta...

Little Easter egg

Yo Kansas,
I know how cliche this is, but there's stuff I want you to know and there is a chance that someday you may read this.

I still care about you more than I care about anyone else on this planet. It wasn't just in that moment in time. It was in a million more, including this one right now and it sucks and I think I love you. I really do.
This isn't just me being an exaggerating teenager either. It is genuine or at least, as genuine as I've ever felt something to be.
I don't wanna date you, don't worry. I think I really do want you though.
I might need to stay away from you, if the feelings still haven't gone away in a few months. If so, I'm sorry.
Just so you know though, I'll always be here for you. I promise.

Kansas, you're everything good.

My interpretation of this song is someone who is trying to keep,in contact with someone they once loved before and still does to a degree knowing that they should never be together and that it won't work out due to painful memories and due to the hurt that they share via past expierences. I may be projecting, but I view this as a bittersweet ode to a forgotten dream. A dream of something you wished woulda worked out, but now have come to terms with and are able to see that it isn't even what you want nor need. Still having that admiration for that individual no matter who they're with and hoping that they can forget the past and be content. I can relate to both sides of this coin. It's painful, but there's always that one person that is just unforgettable no matter how much you convince yourself you're over it.

I first heard this song while I was going through a semi-short lived yet, tough breakup in my early 20's with a girl that turned me onto this band- I fell pretty hard for her at first and figured the feelings were mutual, but life happened and she wanted to still keep me around and date other guys and so things were shattered. --anyway the point-> the last time we hungout, we met at IHOP, ate a few waffles and then talked in the car while she played this song and said "I love/hate this song, it fits our situation to the point that it hurts everytime I hear it now". At that time I didnt really understand what she was getting at, until I read your comment and the old memories hit..so 14 years later, I can finally put that shit to rest. - Case solved -
