Message to a King

You don't need to justify.
Free from all your shackles,
She's gone but not forgotten.
Did she tear the tongue from your head? Are you voiceless now?
SPEAK UP, SPEAK UP!
Did she tear the tongue from your head? Are you voiceless now?
It will never be the same.
I hear the serpent lies, but I resist them this time.
For the message spoken will leave me broken... I will suffocate.
I won't be, I won't be swayed, I know the game.
I won't be, I won't be swayed, I know your fucking aim.
It won't be long. Forever torn, we can move on.
It's not the way we planned this.
You aren't the one I loved when we first met that day.
It's changed and I can't stand it.
Don't try and test me.
I've been locked inside your labyrinth for far too long,
And now we're breaking out.
It won't be long. Forever torn, we can move on.
It's not the way we planned this.
You aren't the one I loved when we first met that day.
It's changed and I can't stand it.
I hate the way you pushed me.
My life became so empty.
Through times that hurt and killed you lost me.
Let's break this chain and try to get free.
Let's get through and break out, it's for the best.
Put this to the rest; I will never forget.
Don't stop now; take it on, the final test.
See what this means... There's nothing left.
You need to hold inside and you need to realise
She wasn't who you thought she could be.
Follow me, and I'll show you.
Follow me, and I'll show you who you used to be.
The song "Message to a King" by Bury Tomorrow tells the story of a person who has been hurt and broken-hearted by someone they once loved deeply. The opening lines, "There's no sacrifice; you don't need to justify. Free from all your shackles, she's gone but not forgotten." suggest that the former lover is no longer in their life but the pain still remains. The lines "Did she tear the tongue from your head? Are you voiceless now? SPEAK UP, SPEAK UP!" indicate that the person is struggling to find their voice and speak up against their pain. Despite feeling suffocated by the message spoken in the past, the person resists the serpent lies this time and won't be swayed by the game of love.
The chorus "It won't be long. Forever torn, we can move on. It's not the way we planned this. You aren't the one I loved when we first met that day. It's changed and I can't stand it." suggests that they are ready to move on from the broken relationship and that the person they once loved is not the same anymore but has changed in a way they cannot stand. The lines "Don't try and test me. I've been locked inside your labyrinth for far too long, and now we're breaking out." suggest that the person has finally gained the strength and courage to break free from the emotional maze created by their lover. In the end, the song encourages the person to hold on to their identity and realize that their former lover was not who they thought they were.
