It’s Too Late
Carole King Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Stayed in bed all mornin' just to pass the time
There's somethin' wrong here, there can be no denyin'
One of us is changin', or maybe we've just stopped tryin'

And it's too late, baby now, it's too late
Though we really did try to make it
Somethin' inside has died, and I can't hide
And I just can't fake it, oh, no, no

It used to be so easy, livin' here with you
You were light and breezy, an' I knew just what to do
Now you look so unhappy, and I feel like a fool

And it's too late, baby now, it's too late
Though we really did try to make it
Somethin' inside has died, and I can't hide
And I just can't fake it, oh, no, no

There'll be good times again for me and you
But we just can't stay together, don't you feel it, too?
Still I'm glad for what we had and how I once loved you

But it's too late, baby now, it's too late
Though we really did try to make it (we can't make it)
Somethin' inside has died, and I can't hide
And I just can't fake it, oh, no, no, no, no, no

It's too late, baby, it's too late now, darling
It's too late

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "It's Too Late" by Carole King are about the end of a relationship that was once loving and easy, but has now fallen apart. The singer has noticed a change in their relationship and feels that it's too late to fix it. They've tried to make it work, but something has died inside and they can no longer hide or fake their feelings. The lyrics suggest that both parties have changed or stopped trying, indicating that the separation may be a mutual decision.

The first verse indicates that the singer has spent time in bed to pass the time, suggesting a sense of boredom or weariness in the relationship. They acknowledge that something is wrong and that it cannot be denied. The second verse reflects on the happier times in the relationship when it was easy and carefree, but the singer now feels like a fool for not seeing or addressing the changes sooner. The chorus repeats the phrase "it's too late" to emphasize that the relationship cannot be saved, even though both parties attempted to make it work.

The final verse provides a glimmer of hope for future good times, but also acknowledges that they cannot stay together and that the separation is necessary. The singer expresses gratitude for what they had and how they once loved the person they are breaking up with. The repetition of "it's too late" in the final chorus reinforces that the opportunity for fixing the relationship has passed and it's time for both parties to move on.

Right there with you.

I got this album not long after it came out, mostly for "I Feel the Earth Move," since the single had come out right before the 1971 Sylmar/Newhall earthquake, and became an instant hit in L.A. I loved the entire album.

I brought it over to my dad's one afternoon, and he enjoyed it as well, and some years later confided to me that this song was the one that he felt captured the ending of his marriage to my mom most perfectly.

Interestingly, the song that always reminded me of their split was "Overs," by Simon and Garfunkel, but I'm not sure that he had even heard that song, much less knew it.

Still love this album, and Bookends, and SO MANY MORE!!!

I'm a 47 year old construction worker and I heard this song for the first time two years ago and I cried. I was alone in my truck, driving to work, so I had time to dry my eyes by the time I got there and told everyone that I was doing great, even though this song tore into my emotions!

Beautiful, love what you wrote , & publicizing it - takes some guts. ❤️ I haven't been able to get this song out of my head this past wk, (my not so subconscious at work, no dout), so just listened to it here for 1st time in 20+ yrs. I can't think of a song w/a higher emotional impact that nails the sorrow & loss of falling out of love more poignantly.
