King's major success began in the 1960s when she and her first husband, Gerry Goffin, wrote more than two dozen chart hits, many of which have become standards, for numerous artists. She has continued writing for other artists since then. King's success as a performer in her own right did not come until the 1970s, when she sang her own songs, accompanying herself on the piano, in a series of albums and concerts. After experiencing commercial disappointment with her debut album Writer, King scored her breakthrough with the album Tapestry, which topped the U.S. album chart for 15 weeks in 1971 and remained on the charts for more than six years.
King has made 25 solo albums, the most successful being Tapestry, which held the record for most weeks at No. 1 by a female artist for more than 20 years. Her record sales were estimated at more than 75 million copies worldwide. She has won four Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She has been inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a performer and songwriter. She is the recipient of the 2013 Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, the first woman to be so honored. She is also a 2015 Kennedy Center Honoree.

Medley: Take Good Care of My Baby
Carole King Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And through it really hurts me so
There's something that I gotta say
Take good care of my baby
Please don't ever make her blue
Just tell her that you love her
Make sure you're thinking of her
In everything you say and do
Now don't you ever make her cry
Just let your love surround her
Don't let her see a cloudy sky
Once upon a time that little girl was mine
If I'd been true I know she'd never be with you, so
Take good care of my baby
Be just as kind as you can be
And if you should discover
That you don't really love her
Just send my baby back home to me
Take good care of my baby
Please don't ever make her blue
Just tell her that you love her
Make sure you're thinking of her
In everything you say and do
Take good care of my baby
Now don't you ever make her cry
Just let your love surround her
Don't let her see a cloudy sky
Once upon a time that little girl was mine
If I'd been true I know she'd never be with you, so
Take good care of my baby
Be just as kind as you can be
And if you should discover
That you don't really love her
Just send my baby back home to me
Oh take good care of my baby, take good care of my baby
Just take good care of my baby
The lyrics to Carole King's song Medley: Take Good Care of My Baby tell the story of a heartbroken lover who has lost the person they used to be with. This lover is pleading with the new person in their ex's life to take care of her, to not make her sad, and to make sure they always show her love in all their actions. The singer feels regret for not being true to their former partner and accepting that she is now with another. However, they still care deeply and want the best for her. If the new relationship doesn't work out, they hope that their ex will return to them to start anew.
The song captures the feeling of loss and the desire to protect someone you care about. The lyrics are filled with emotion and depth, making it a touching ballad that has been covered by many artists over the years. The melody is simple, but effective in emphasizing the raw emotions of the lyrics. The song is not just about love, but also about forgiveness, acceptance, and understanding.
Overall, Carole King's Medley: Take Good Care of My Baby is a poignant tribute to how complicated and messy love can be. It speaks to the idea that even if we can't be with the one we love, we can still care for them in our own way, offering them the support they need to be happy.
