Catalepsy was founded in 2004. Rob Walden is the only founding member still with the band. In 2008, the band finished a tour with Hatebreed for their Live Dominance DVD release. They completed their first studio album, Iniquity, in January 2008. The album was released on May 13, 2008. In early 2008, the band recorded a music video for their song "Trust". It premiered on MTV's Headbangers Ball. In late 2008, Drew Carothers left the band due to personal issues. He was replaced with Josh Anderson of the Florida band Iamdivide. The band continued to tour, with such bands as After the Burial, Oceano, Too Pure to Die, Waking the Cadaver, Rose Funeral and many others.
In October 2010, during the recording of Bleed, Josh Anderson left the band. He was replaced by Rick Norman, formerly of the band In The Ruins, also a past member of Catalepsy. On December 3, 2010, the band released the first single from Bleed called "Infernal". On February 26, 2011, the band announced a music video for the track "Bleed" due in the album release of May 10, 2011. Bleed was released in May 10, 2011 through Eulogy Recordings.
In late 2011, vocalist Rick Norman left the band due to personal reasons and was replaced by former vocalist Josh Anderson. On December 28, 2011, the band released a new song off of their upcoming album Abomination of Desolation titled "Westboro", a reference to the Westboro Baptist Church, which is the main subject of the song's lyrics. The new material demonstrates somewhat of a return to their death metal-oriented sound as heard in Iniquity and Godless while still maintaining the groove-oriented sound of Bleed.
The band announced that they had split-up in 2012 on December 7th, 2013. Several members of the final line-up continue to play together in the metalcore/dubstep band Exotype.

Catalepsy Lyrics

In his reveling moment
YOU SCREAM HIS NAME
Hoping you would be answered
Repent your sins
In these last moments of life
If there's a voice to be heard
Where is the voice?
Hope does not exist for you X2
But will your faith stay true? X3
All you life investing false hope into a book you've misheard
In the end will you stay true to maintaining faith in the one who misheard you
Don't you know your only savior is you? X4
The first two lines of Catalepsy's song Iniquity's chorus, "Absent in his reveling moment, you scream his name, hoping you would be answered," appear to describe a moment of desperation and helplessness. The singer seems to be calling upon a higher power, perhaps a deity, for guidance and rescue. The singer is in dire need of assistance, as the lines "Repent your sins, in these last moments of life" suggest. The singer is painfully aware of their wrongdoing and knows that they have limited time to undo their mistakes. However, they seem to be devoid of hope, as they ask, "If there's a voice to be heard, where is the voice?"
The chorus's second half provides a stark contrast to its first half, as it questions the singer's faith in God. The line "Hope does not exist for you" is repeated twice, emphasizing the singer's loss of hope. The subsequent lines, "But will your faith stay true?" repeat thrice, forcing the listener to examine their belief system critically. The next verse attacks the singer's religious faith, mocking their trust in a book they have misinterpreted. The line "Don't you know your only savior is you?" closes the conversation by reminding the singer that they are in control and responsible for their destiny.
