He stated in the film Let's Get Lost that an acquaintance attempted to rob him one night but backed off, only to return the next night with a group of several men who chased him. He entered a car and became surrounded. Instead of rescuing him, the people inside the car pushed him back out onto the street, where the chase by his attackers continued, and subsequently he was beaten to the point that his teeth, never in good condition to begin with, were knocked out, leaving him without the ability to play his horn. He took odd jobs, among them pumping gas. Meanwhile he was fitted for dentures and worked on his embouchure. Three months later he got a gig in New York City.

Baker recorded the live album Chet Baker in Tokyo with his quartet featuring pianist Harold Danko, bassist Hein van de Geyn and drummer John Engels less than a year before his death, and it was released posthumously. Silent Night, a recording of Christmas music, was recorded with Christopher Mason in New Orleans in 1986 and released in 1987.

Heroin and cocaine were found in his hotel room, and an autopsy also found these drugs in his body. There was no evidence of a struggle, and the death was ruled an accident. A plaque outside the hotel memorializes him and the room he was staying in, No. 210, is named "The Chet Baker Room".
Baker is buried at the Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood, California.

The first verse of Chet Baker's "I Get Along Without You Very Well" details the singer's claim that they can survive without the presence of an ex-lover. They describe the existence that they have created without their former partner and how they are able to maintain it. However, when the soft sound of rain falls and the droplets from leaves remind the singer of being sheltered and loved, they cannot help but admit that their memories of their ex still linger. The first time they admit to "getting along without you very well" feels like a forced declaration of independence, as they try to convince themselves that they do not need their former partner. Despite this, the soft sound of the raindrops is enough to crack the walls they have built up.
The second verse continues with the singer focusing on trying to forget their ex. They have forgotten them as much as they should have, but the mention of their name or hearing someone else's laughter causes them to remember their ex. They know they have to move on, but their memory seems to be stuck in the past. The chorus is then repeated, emphasizing the singer's repeated defense mechanisms of pretending like they are better off alone. They are fully aware, however, that spring may be the trigger that will make them think of their lover again, leading to heartbreak. The third verse seems to be the singer questioning themselves for ever believing that they could "kid the moon" with their broken heart. In the end, they realize that they cannot keep reaching back to their ex, asking if they should call them one more time. They ultimately decide that they need to stay true to their tune and continue getting along without their ex-lover.
