The firstborn son of Sérgio Buarque de Hollanda, Buarque lived at several locations throughout his childhood, though mostly in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Rome. He wrote and studied literature as a child and found music through the bossa nova compositions of Tom Jobim and João Gilberto. He performed as a singer and guitarist in the 1960s as well as writing a play that was deemed dangerous by the Brazilian military dictatorship of the time. Buarque, along with several Tropicalist and MPB musicians, was threatened by the Brazilian military government and eventually left Brazil for Italy in 1969. However, he came back to Brazil in 1970, and continued to record, perform, and write, though much of his material was suppressed by government censors. He released several more albums in the 1980s and published three novels in the 1990s and 2000s.
In 2019, Buarque was awarded the Camões Prize, the most important prize for literature in the Portuguese language.

Chico Buarque Lyrics

Que seus lábios são reais
Que seus olhos vão além
Que uma noite faz o bem
E nunca mais
Que salta de sonho em sonho
E não quebra telha
E não se atrapalha
Que cruza o rio
E não se molha
In Chico Buarque's song Ludo Real, the lyrics are a poetic description of a person who is admirable and noble, possessing qualities that are unique and real. The singer asks what kind of nobility this person has to possess such genuine lips and eyes that go beyond what is visible, capable of doing good in just one night and never forgetting it. This person is someone who has the ability to jump from dream to dream without breaking a tile, who can navigate through love without getting confused or lost. This person is able to cross a river without getting wet, suggesting an air of grace and poise in all movements.
The song can be interpreted as a tribute to someone who has achieved a great level of authenticity and purity, someone who embodies a sense of grace that makes them stand out from the rest. It can also be seen as an invitation to strive for these qualities in oneself. The lyrics are poetic and metaphorical, creating a vivid and powerful image of this person and their admirable qualities.

Que nobreza você tem
What grandeur you possess
Que seus lábios são reais
That your lips are real
Que seus olhos vão além
That your eyes go beyond
Que uma noite faz o bem
That one night does well
E nunca mais
And never again
Que salta de sonho em sonho
That jumps from dream to dream
E não quebra telha
And doesn't break a tile
Que passa através do amor
That passes through love
E não se atrapalha
And doesn't get confused
Que cruza o rio
That crosses the river
E não se molha
And doesn't get wet
