La grenade
Clara Luciani Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hé toi
Qu'est-ce que tu regardes?
T'as jamais vu une femme qui se bat
Suis-moi
Dans la ville blafarde
Et je te montrerai
Comme je mords, comme j'aboie
Prends garde, sous mon sein la grenade
Sous mon sein là regarde
Sous mon sein la grenade
Prends garde, sous mon sein la grenade
Sous mon sein là regarde
Sous mon sein la grenade

Hé toi
Mais qu'est-ce que tu crois?
Je ne suis qu'un animal
Déguisé en madone
Hé toi
Je pourrais te faire mal
Je pourrais te blesser, oui
Dans la nuit qui frissonne

Prends garde, sous mon sein la grenade
Sous mon sein là regarde
Sous mon sein la grenade
Prends garde, sous mon sein la grenade
Sous mon sein là regarde
Sous mon sein la grenade

Hé toi
Qu'est-ce que tu t'imagines?
Je suis aussi vorace
Aussi vivante que toi
Sais-tu
Que là sous ma poitrine
Une rage sommeille
Que tu ne soupçonnes pas?

Prends garde, sous mon sein la grenade
Sous mon sein là regarde
Sous mon sein la grenade
Prends garde, sous mon sein la grenade
Sous mon sein là regarde

Sous mon sein la grenade
Prends garde

Overall Meaning

Clara Luciani's song La grenade is a powerful and unapologetic ode to the strength and ferocity of women. The lyrics convey a message of empowerment, encouraging women to assert themselves and fight back against the societal expectations and restrictions placed upon them. The first verse challenges the male gaze, calling out to a man who is staring and reminding him that women are not to be objectified or underestimated. The second verse reveals the singer's hidden strength, warning that she is not the harmless and submissive figure she may appear to be. The third verse emphasizes that women are just as capable of passion and vitality as men, and that their emotions should not be dismissed or diminished.

The refrain throughout the song is a reference to a grenade hidden beneath the singer's breast. This metaphor implies that women possess a dangerous and explosive power, just waiting to be unleashed. The use of this imagery is particularly effective in conveying the idea that women should not be underestimated and that they have the ability to fight back against oppression and injustice.

Overall, La grenade is a beautifully crafted song that celebrates the strength and resilience of women. Through its powerful lyrics and catchy melody, it encourages women to embrace their power and assert themselves in a world that often tries to diminish it.

The Grenade (English translation and some additional Clara testimonies at the end of this one to silence the controversy over the meaning of this song)

The Grenade (Metrified, poetic, rhyming when possible)

Hey you,
What are you looking?
You've never seen woman is fighting?
Back in
The dreary town with me,
And I will reveal you
How I bite, how I bark!
Take heed! Under breast, the grenade,
Under breast, there, take look!
Under breast, the grenade.
Take heed! Under breast, the grenade,
Under breast, there, take look!
Under breast, the grenade.

Hey you,
But what do you think?
I'm just an animal,
Disguised as madonna.
Hey you,
I could hurt you badly!
I could wound you dourly, yeah!
In the shivering night,
Take heed! Under breast, the grenade,
Under breast, there, take look!
Under breast, the grenade.
Take heed! Under breast, the grenade,
Under breast, there, take look!
Under breast, the grenade.

Hey you,
What were you imagining?
I'm as voracious,
As alive as you are!
You know
That there under my chest,
A rage is in slumber
That you couldn't suspect?
Take heed! Under breast, the grenade,
Under breast, there, take look!
Under breast, the grenade.
Take heed! Under breast, the grenade,
Under breast, there, take look!
Under breast, the grenade.
Take heed!

Hello,

In this song, the character of the woman played by Clara is a fighter defining herself as a human being, with its ups and downs, its good and its bad sides. She immediately warns her (new) partner that under her breast there's a beating heart. She warns him she's not a doll... (Me lol)

She worked with Sage, Benjamin Lebeau (des Shoes) and Yuksek who co-produced three titles including "La Grenade". (culturesecrets.fr)

In the title "The Grenade", she develops the idea that women aren't necessarily fragile beings but have great strength within them. “I wrote the song before the Weinstein case broke. I felt the need after a tour that I was doing solo, accompanied by a sound engineer woman. And when we walked into a room, guys would often look at us like two UFOs, in making bad jokes like, "Shall we show you how to plug in a plug?" Added to other remarks like “But you write your songs?” or “You're funny for a girl,” it ended up weighing me down. "(Lemonde.fr)

“Women with breast cancer have written to me about the refrain of the song: under my breast, the grenade. One of them said : 'I am a fighter and this song helps me.' There is even an association which took it as an anthem. I think it's great. There is something healing about this album. Me, I think of healing heartache, but it can actually be healing from illness. Love is often compared to an illness elsewhere. I find it beautiful what people project onto the songs, what they see, what they hear, how it resonates with their own lives. These are songs that I sing for people more than for myself. You're welcome! :)
