The most important thing to know about efficiency:
It is defined as "energy we want" divided by "energy we pay for".

Enumerate the energy output of a system, which is energy we want.
Similarly, enumerate the energy input to a system, which is energy we pay for.

Carry out that fraction.

As an example, for an engine, the energy we want, is the net work output of the engine. The power stroke delivers power, and some of that power also has to be used for powering the concurrent compression stroke in another cylinder. Work done by the power stroke minus work done on the compression stroke, is the net work output of the system that we want (assuming intake and exhaust are negligible).

The energy we pay for, the fuel that the engine burns. This is the heat input to the engine, that comes from burning the fuel-air mixture just before the power stroke. The aforementioned net work done, divided by the total energy of the fuel burned, is the efficiency.

Since you can arbitrarily choose any reference frame to analyze the collision, you can take any inelastic collision, and make it happen in any of the above scenarios, just by changing the point of view of the problem.

Consider the following inelastic collsion:
Object 1 is 4 kg and moving 5 m/s to the right.
Object 2 is 1 kg, and moving 3 m/s to the left
They coalesce after colliding, and proceed to be moving 3.4 m/s to the right.

Look at this from the lab reference frame and a stationary observer, it is two objects moving in opposite directions, colliding and proceeding at 3.4 m/s to the right.

Look at this from the center of mass reference frame, a useful trick for analyzing collisions, it is two objects moving in opposite directions that collide and come to rest.

Look at this from the reference frame of object 1, it is one object static (object 1), and another object (object 2) colliding with it.

Look at this from the point of view of an observer moving at 4 m/s to the left, and both objects are moving to the right in that reference frame.

Still similar principles would apply. Just none of your initial velocities would be negative

Consider a 3 kg mass and a 5 kg mass, moving at 1 m/s and 2 m/s respectively, such that the second one will collide with the first. Calculate the final speeds if they A) have an inelastic collision, and B) have an elastic collision.

For an inelastic collision, momentum is conserved and they end with the same final velocity. vf = (m1*v1i + m2*v2i)/(m1 + m2). Both v1 and v2 are positive numbers, and when we evaluate the expression, we get 1.625 m/s.

For an elastic collision, we have to conserve both momentum and kinetic energy. Momentum conservation is given by:
m1*v1i + m2*v2i = m1*v1f+ m2*v2f

Conservation of kinetic energy:
1/2*m1*v1i^2 + 1/2*m2*v2i^2 = 1/2*m1*v1f^2 + 1/2*m2*v2f^2

Cancel the 1/2's, and solve the system:
m1*v1i + m2*v2i = m1*v1f+ m2*v2f
m1*v1i^2 + m2*v2i^2 = m1*v1f^2 + m2*v2f^2

You will get two solutions. One where v1f and v2f both equal their corresponding initial values as if there was no collision (which is the trivial solution), and one where v1f and v2f equal the post-collision values.

A trick in solving this without having to solve a quadratic formula, is to look at this problem from the center of mass reference frame, instead of the lab reference frame.

Calculate vcm = (m1*v1i + m2*v2i)/(m1 + m2) = 1.625 m/s. Hold onto that for later. Notice that this is also the final velocity if they had an inelastic collision.

Define u1i and u2i, as initial speeds in the center of mass reference frame:
u1i = v1i - vcm
u2i = v2i - vcm

After an elastic collision, u1i and u2i, end up reversing for the final velocities.
u1f = -u1i
u2f = -u2f

Add back vcm, and translate back to the original reference frame:
v1f = u1f + vcm
v2f = u2f + vcm
v1f = -(v1i - vcm)+ vcm
v2f = -(v2i - vcm) + vcm
v1f = -v1i + 2*vcm
v2f = -v2i + 2*vcm

Plug in vcm = 1.625 m/s, v1i = 1 m/s and v2i = 2 m/s:
v1f = 2.25 m/s
v2f = 1.25 m/s

The way you make physics easy and interesting is rare, most youtubers and professors make me want to drop the book on my head, and on top of that I'm studying from Physics by Serway as my main source so it's not much help. Thank you once again! You're the BEST!

Your videos for physics and biology are the best! I've tried watching so many but your simplistic explainatation and practice at the end/summary is great!
