Compay Segundo (November 18, 1907 – July 13, 2003), was a Cuban musician and songwriter.
Segundo was born Máximo Francisco Repilado Muñoz and brought up in the city of Santiago de Cuba. He became a songwriter and performer, well-known to fans of Cuban music. He was also the inventor of the armónico, a seven-stringed guitar-like instrument.
In his early years he played the guitar, the clarinet and the bongos. He also played the congas.
His curious stage name derives from the fact that he played second voice in a popular duet of the 1950s called Los Compadres (compadre, or compay for short, in Cuba means "baptism brother", but as a colloquialism is used also to designate a good friend).
However, international fame only came in 1997 with the release of the Buena Vista Social Club album, a hugely successful recording which won several Grammy awards. Compay Segundo appeared in the film of the same title, made subsequently by Wim Wenders.
His most famous composition is "Chan Chan", the opening track on the Buena Vista Social Club album, whose four opening chords are instantly recognizable all over the world. "Chan Chan" was recorded by Segundo himself various times as well as by countless other Latin artists.
At a fiesta he sang to Presidente Fidel Castro, who took his pulse and joked about his vitality despite his 90-plus years. "Who could have imagined that?" he asked when he found himself at the Vatican City, performing "Chan Chan" before Pope John Paul II. He explained his longevity simply: mutton consommé and a drink of rum.
He predicted that he would live to be 115, but died of kidney failure in Havana, twenty years short of his ambition, and three days before Celia Cruz.

Sarandonga un arroz con bacala'o
Sarandonga alla en lo alto del puerto
Sarandonga que mañana es domingo
Sarandonga cuchibili cuchibili
Sarandonga cuchibili cuchibili
Sarandonga cuchibili cuchibili
Cuando yo tenía dinero
Me llamaban 'Todoman'
Cuando yo tenía dinero
Me llamaban 'Todoman'
Como ahora ya no lo tengo
Ay, me llaman 'Todoestamal' así
Sarandonga nos vamos a comer
Sarandonga un arroz con bacala'o
Sarandonga alla en lo alto del puerto
Sarandonga que mañana es domingo
Sarandonga cuchibili cuchibili
Sarandonga cuchibili cuchibili
Sarandonga cuchibili cuchibili
¡Sarandonga y oyeme cantar!
Yo no como más judías
Porque me sientan muy mal
Yo no como más judías
Porque me sientan muy mal
Y luego vive la gente prima
Come boberías
Sarandonga nos vamos a comer
Sarandonga un arroz con bacala'o
Sarandonga alla en lo alto del puerto
Sarandonga que mañana es domingo
Sarandonga cuchibili cuchibili
Sarandonga cuchibili cuchibili
Sarandonga cuchibili cuchibili
¡Sarandonga y oyeme cantar!
Los gitanos y los payos
En gracia se dan la mano
Con alegría y buen cante
Los queremos como hermanos
Unos los tiran de frente y otros
Los tiran de lado
Pero la rumba es la madre
Y alla todos les cantamos, ay
Sarandonga nos vamos a comer
Sarandonga un arroz con bacala'o
Sarandonga alla en lo alto del puerto
Sarandonga que mañana es domingo
Sarandonga cuchibili cuchibili
Sarandonga cuchibili cuchibili
Sarandonga cuchibili cuchibili
¡Sarandonga y oyeme cantar!
Esta vida hay que beberla
En sorbitos de cristal
Esta vida hay que beberla
En sorbitos de cristal
Un sorbito por nosotros y otro
Por lo que nos dan
Sarandonga nos vamos a comer
Sarandonga un arroz con bacala'o
Sarandonga alla en lo alto del puerto
Sarandonga que mañana es domingo
Sarandonga cuchibili cuchibili
Sarandonga cuchibili cuchibili

The lyrics to Compay Segundo's song "Sarandonga" describe the joy of eating rice with cod fish in the Puerto Rican port, complemented by the fact that tomorrow is Sunday, a day to relax and enjoy. The word "sarandonga" itself seems to be nonsense, but it is likely a reference to the sound of the drums that accompany the song. The chorus, "cuchibili cuchibili" is also likely nonsensical, but adds to the fun and catchy rhythm of the song.
The verse where the singer laments his fall from being called "Todoman" to "Todoestamal" showcases the ups and downs of life, a theme common in many traditional Latin American songs. The mention of not eating beans because they make him sick is followed by a critique of people who eat nonsense food. The last verse celebrates the unity of gypsies and non-gypsies, saying that they all sing to the mother Rumba.
Overall, "Sarandonga" is a fun and lively song that celebrates the simple things in life, like good food, rest, and music. Its catchy rhythm and silly chorus make it easy to dance and sing along to, adding to its popularity in Latin America and beyond.
