Cri-Cri is known as the "grillito cantor" or "the singing cricket". He is a character created by Francisco Gabilondo Soler in his childhood and may even be considered "his inner personality"
The character became so famous and gave its author such renown, that it became a second name for Gabilondo. In the mid part of the 20th century he became the most recognizable singer of children's songs in Spanish. Gabilondo's dedication to this segment of the population has been greatly admired, comparable to Walt Disney in his honest approach to making life fun for those who are getting started in life.
La Guacamaya -

Cerca del mar
En la famosa Huasteca.
Un periquín
Se encaprichó
Por una verde muñeca.
Toda su fé
Toda la puso en un ave
Mas sucedió que ella
Se fué sin escuchar su clamor.
Guacamaya lindo sol
Tu perfil redondo
Y tu plumaje multicolor.
Lejos de aquí
Cerca del mar
En la famosa Huasteca.
Un periquín
Se encaprichó
Por una verde muñeca.
Ciego de amor
Toda su fe
Toda la puso en un ave
Mas sucedió que ella
Se fué sin escuchar su clamor.
Guacamaya donde estarás?
Hay será en la playa?
Será en el bosque?
O en dónde mas?.
The song “La Guacamaya” by Cri-Cri is a story of unrequited love between a periquin (a small parrot) and a green muñeca (doll) embodied in the form of a beautiful Guacamaya (macaw). The opening lines, “Lejos de aquí, cerca del mar, en la famosa Huasteca” transport us to a specific location, the Huasteca region of Mexico. Here, the periquin falls head over heels in love with the Guacamaya and places all of his faith in her, despite her apparent disinterest in him.
The repetition of “ciego de amor” (blind with love), serves as a reminder of the intensity of the periquin’s emotions towards the Guacamaya. This love, which is symbolized by his attachment to the bird, eventually leads to a sense of loss, as the Guacamaya flies away and leaves him behind. In the final lines, the question “Guacamaya donde estarás?” (Where are you, Guacamaya?) suggests that the periquin is still searching for his lost love and wondering where she might be.
In conclusion, “La Guacamaya” can be interpreted as a cautionary tale about unrequited love, highlighting the ways in which strong feelings can lead to heartbreak and disappointment. Despite its simple melody and playful lyrics, the song carries a timeless message about the risks and rewards of falling in love.
